皆さん、こんにちは。五月晴れの良い天気が続き庭のブルーベリーも赤く色づいて
きました。最近はわたしも年老いたのかちょっとしたことですぐに胸が切なくなっ
てきます。先日、白っぽい品の良い和服に身を包み、花束を抱えたった一人で凛と
してどこかに向かっておられるご高齢のおばあさんとすれちがいました。おそらく
ひとりで身づくろいをして外出することも相当難儀だろうと察せられる風情なので
すが何か礼を失するわけにはいかぬ急用でもあったのでしょう。その事情は分から
ぬにせよおばあさんの熱い思いがこちらにも伝播してきてなぜか目頭が熱くなって
しまいました。ああいう気品のあるひたむきな表情をこの国の人々が失ってから久
しいな、グローバリゼーションとはそういうことだ、という感慨に囚われました。

Inside the Mind of the Pope 

Thank you for your coverage of the election of our new Pope. We Catholics 
cannot explain in mere human terms the joy of having chosen a Pope. But as 
the whole world has seen, we certainly can express that joy. As free and 
responsible persons, we follow the Pope, the vicar of Christ on earth, not 
out of fear but out of love. We know by faith that when we listen to the 
Pope, we follow Christ.

新教皇選任に関する記事をどうもありがとう。わたしたちカトリック教徒にとって
は新教皇が選任された喜びがいかばかりか単に言葉で説明することはとてもできま
せん。でも世界中が目撃された通り、カトリック教徒はこの喜悦を表現はできるの
です。自由で責任ある人間として、わたしたちは現世でのキリストの代理人である
教皇に恐れからではなく愛の気持ちから付き従います。わたしたちは信心の力によ
り教皇に耳を傾けることがキリストの教えに従うことだと知っているのです。

Bolton 's Image Problem 

Re Your story on the controversy surrounding John Bolton, Bush's choice as 
ambassador to the U.N. [May 2]: Does the U.S. really want a contender for 
worst boss to represent it to the rest of the world? A former colleague 
called him a "kiss-up, kickdown sort of guy." Too many of us know the type.
 All of us should feel the injustice every time that sort of person is 
rewarded. The U.S. has an image problem in much of the world. We're seen as
 out of control, arrogant and a bully. Yet the Administration wants a guy 
at the U.N.who is out of control, arrogant and a bully.

ボルトンのイメージ問題

ブッシュが国連大使に指名したジョン・ボルトンを巡る諸問題に関する５月２日の
記事について。アメリカは最低の上司と揶揄されるこの人物を国際社会に向けた米
国の代表者に本気でしたいのだろうか？以前のボルトンの同僚は彼のことを「上に
媚び、下を苛めるタイプの嫌な奴」と言っている。そう言われりゃどんな奴かみん
なもよく分かるだろう。こういう人間が報われるたびにわたしたち皆の不公平感は
蔓延していく。いまアメリカのイメージは世界中で地に堕ちている。自国のエゴの
自制ができず傲慢で、他国を脅してばかりいる国だと見られているのである。それ
でもまだ政府はこのような自制心のない傲慢で恐喝屋みたいな人間を米国の代表と
して国連に送り込みたいのだろうか。

● Could I call you?

i)   I am too busy to talk to you now. Do you mind if I telephone you later
     on?(Usually in a business context. Also used with 'can' in place of   
     'could'. 'May' is too polite here.)

1. SALLY: I can't talk to you right now. Could I call you?
   TOM  : Sure, no problem.

2. BILL: I've got to run. Sorry. Can I call you?
   BOB : No, I'm leaving town. I'll try to get in touch next week.

ii) Do you mind if I call you and ask for another date sometime?; Do you   
    mind if I call you sometime(in order to further our relationship)?
    (Usually in a romantic context. Also used with 'can' or 'may' in place 
    of 'could.')

1. MARY: I had a marvelous time, Bob.
   BOB : Me, too. Can I call you?
   MARY: Sure.

2. BOB : I had a marvelous time, Mary. May I call you?
   MARY: Maybe in a week or two. I have a very busy week ahead. I'll call  
         you, in fact.

i) の意味ではビジネスシーンの頻出フレーズ。要するに慇懃な拒否表現。例文では
I am too busy to talk to you now. や I can't talk to you right now. と状況
説明が入っているので分かりやすいが、いきなりケータイに電話した相手からこう
言われたら今取り込み中なので電話を切ってくれという意味。まあii)の意味で相手
が言ってると誤解してしまう勘違い男はいないと思いますが。


● Could I have a word with you? / I'd like (to have) a word with you.

I need to speak to you briefly in private.(The alternative entry is also 
used with 'can' or 'may' in place of 'could'.)

1. BOB  : Can I have a word with you?
   SALLY: Sure. I'll be with you in a minute.

2. SALLY: Tom?
   TOM  : Yes?
   SALLY: I'd like to have a word with you.
   TOM  : Okay. What's it about?


● Could I see you in my office?

I want to talk to you in the privacy of my office.(Typically said by the 
boss to an employee. Also used with 'can' or 'may' in place of 'could'.)

1. "Mr. Franklin," said Bill's boss sort of sternly, "could I see you in my
   office for a minute? We need to talk about something."

2. SUE : Could I see you in my office?
   JOHN: Sure. What's cooking?

GROUP SEEKS BAN OF TWENTIETH CENTURY FROM KANSAS SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS

Last Century 'Just a Theory,' Activists Say

A political action group in the state of Kansas is applying pressure on the
 Kansas State Board of Education to ban any and all references to the 
twentieth century from school textbooks, a spokesman for the group 
confirmed today.

The move to ban the twentieth century came up in a series of contentious 
school board hearings this week as the group loudly complained that the 
state's current textbooks are rife with references to the controversial 
century, which they say may or may not have happened.

"These textbooks state unequivocally that the twentieth century occurred, 
as if that were a proven historic fact," said Gordon Lavalier, the group's 
leader and spokesman.  "The simple truth is, the twentieth century is and 
has always been nothing but a theory."

If the group gets its way, starting in the fall of 2005 Kansas students 
would be taught from newly reconstituted history books that end in the year
 1899.

Among students at Kansas City's John F. Kennedy High School, which the 
group has demanded be renamed William Jennings Bryan High School, reaction 
to the ban on the twentieth century was mixed.

"If the twentieth century didn't happen, does that mean I have to give up 
my iPod?" asked junior Carolynn Bevins, 17.  

But sophomore Zach Golloway, 16, was more upbeat about the news: "If it 
means that we have to learn a hundred less years of history, that would 
rule!"

Elsewhere, actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes denied that their romantic 
relationship was a publicity stunt after a trailer for their wedding 
appeared in over 3,000 theaters.

リエ氏。

もし同グループの主張が認められれば、カンザス州の学生は２００５年秋の新学期
から、１８９９年で記述が終わる新たに編集しなおされた歴史教科書を使って授業
を受けることになる。

同グループがウィリアム・ジェニングス・ブライアン高校と学校名を変更すべきだ
と主張しているカンザス市、ジョン・Ｆ・ケネディ高校の学生たちの間でも意見は
分かれている。

「もし２０世紀が生起しなかったとしたら、私 iポッドを使えないってこと？」と
１７歳のキャロリン・ベビンス。

一方２年生で１６歳のザッハ・ゴロウェイはもっと浮かれている。「１００年分も
歴史の勉強しなくていいってわけでしょ、最高じゃん！」

その他のニュース。俳優トム・クルーズとカティ・ホロムズは二人のラブロマンス
がヤラセだという噂を否定。じゃあ何で結婚披露宴用トレーラーが全米３０００の
映画館に現れたわけ？
