皆さん、こんにちは。今年も残り３週間を切りました。今年１年間でどれだけ変化
できたでしょうか。自分を変えるというのは苦痛をともなう作業ですが、自分を変
えようとしないで他人を変えたがる人間には堕したくないですね。８２歳になった
横文字にからきし弱い父が先日、電子辞書を買っていたのには驚くと同時に頭が下
がりました。わたしも負けられません。

Street Fight in Iraq
Your report on the full-scale assault to take back Fallujah from the
insurgents [Nov. 22] reminds me of the Vietnam-era axiom: "We had to
destroy the village in order to save it." Although reconstruction is
supposed to begin as soon as we pacify the Fallujah cauldron, attempts at
such rebuilding in the rest of Iraq have shown that it is impossible to
begin the work and spend the budgeted money because of the lack of
security for work crews. What contractor on earth would want to undertake
such risks to work in Fallujah, the most dangerous place in Iraq?

そのような復興事業を開始し予算化された復興資金を消化するのも不可能だろう。
復興事業に従事する労働者の安全が確保されていないのだから。イラクでもっとも
危険なファルージャでの復興事業を請け負うような業者がいったいどこにいるだろ
うか。

FEARING ATTACKS BY ATHLETES, FANS TAKE STEROIDS
Random Drug-testing for Fans Urged
Increasingly fearful of being attacked by athletes climbing into the
stands, sports fans in record numbers have taken to using steroids to bulk
up such violent encounters.
Those are the findings of Dr. Logan Dinelle of the University of
Minnesota, who has been studying steroid usage by professional sports fans
for the past five years and says that the practice is "unquestionably" on
the rise.
"The average sports fan goes to a game now recognizing that there is a
distinct possibility, if not a probability, that an athlete will attack
him at some point," says Dr. Dinelle. "If that athlete is on steroids,
the fan will lose that fight if he is not on steroids, too."
One fan who participated in Dr. Dinelle's study on condition on anonymity
says that he started taking steroids three years ago because "all the
other fans were doing it."
"Any fan who goes to a professional sporting event not on steroids is, in
my opinion, a chump," the fan says.
Far from condoning steroid usage among sports fans, Dr. Dinelle calls the
trend "troubling" and says that Major League Baseball and the National
Basketball Association should institute random drug-testing of fans
"immediately."
"Over the past few years, we've noticed that in fights between athletes
and fans, the fans have often won," Dr. Dinelle says. "If it turns out
that those fans were on steroids, all of those records should be thrown
out the window."
Elsewhere, President Bush said that in order to shrink the deficit he
would check the back of the Declaration of Independence for a treasure map.

暴力的事態に対応しようとステロイドを摂取して筋肉増強をはかるスポーツファン
が記録的に増加している。
この事実は過去５年間にわたりプロスポーツファンによるステロイド剤の使用を研
究してきたミネソタ大学のローガン・ディネル博士により明らかにされた。博士曰
く、ステロイド剤使用がファンの間で急増しているのは「間違いない。」
「試合観戦に出向く平均的なスポーツファンは、選手からいきなり攻撃される事態
が頻繁には起こらないとしてもその可能性が目立って増加していることを今ではよ
く認識しています。だから、自分たちもステロイドで筋肉増強しないとステロイド
で筋肉増強した選手たちに負けてしまうとファンも考えているのです。」と博士の
コメント。
匿名を条件にディネル博士の調査に協力したあるファンは３年前からステロイドの
服用を始めたという。「だって他のファンもみんなやってるから。」というのがそ
の理由。
彼によれば、「ステロイドもやらないでスポーツイベントを観にいくファンは頭が
いかれてんじゃないの。」というわけだ。
スポーツファンの間で蔓延するステロイド剤使用は看過できない困った流行である
と指摘したうえでディネル博士はＭＬＢとＮＢＡは「即座に」ファンに対する抜き
打ちの薬物検査を実施すべきと発言。
「ここ数年間、選手とファンの間の争いではファンがよく勝っていたわけですが、
これがもしファンによるステロイド剤使用の結果であることが判明すれば、これら
の記録はすべて取り消されねばなりません。」とディネル博士。
他では、ブッシュ大統領が財政赤字を縮小するため独立宣言書の裏側に宝地図が描
かれていないかどうかチェックするつもりだ、と宣言したそうだ。

訳者注) taking steroids や on steroids を当初、ステロイド服用と訳していま
したが「服用」は口から飲むことで実際にはボンズ選手はステロイド系クリームの
「塗布」でありジアンビ選手の「皮下注射」のケースもありますのでステロイド剤
「摂取」と訳しなおしました。take や get などを日本語に訳出するときは注意が
必要ですね。

NOTEBOOK の [Riskiest Business] は頻発する中国の炭鉱事故に関する記事。今年
１９億トンに達し世界の石炭生産量の３５％を占める中国(２００３年)が炭鉱事故
による死者数では全世界の８０％を占めており産出量１００万トン当たりの死者数
は中国が３．７１人、これはアメリカの０．０３人、南アフリカの０．０８６人に
比べても突出した数字。急速な高成長を続ける中国の暗部の一つである。文頭の

cheap rate." の may be had は have動詞の受動態と考えてよさそうだが現代では
あまり見られない形のようだ。
[Choking On Growth] も同じく高度成長を続ける北京や広州など中国諸都市および
ニューデリー、ボンベイなどインド諸都市の大気汚染に関する記事。かって日本が
歩んできた道でもある。日本で最近流行の屋上庭園(rooftop greenery)も紹介され
ている。
[Seeking a Fresh Mandate] は台湾立法院選挙をめぐる記事。１１日に行われた投
票結果は国民党と親民党の野党連合が１１３議席を獲得、過半数を制し、民進党と
台湾団結連盟(台連)の与党連合は１０１議席にとどまったので「脱中国化」に歯止
めがかかるだろうといわれている。表題の Mandate は政府や議員に対する選挙民
からの信任、支持という意味。委任統治領は a mandated territory ですね。
[NOT NATURAL] は連続台風に見舞われ１４００人近くの死者行方不明者を出したフ
ィリピン、ルソン島東部からの報告。これは天災ではなく過去何十年間にもわたり
森林伐採が続けられ数百万ヘクタールの森林が消失したことの帰結であり人災だと
いう内容。１１日付のジャパンタイムズでも倒壊した建物から１０日ぶりに２０人
のフィリピン人が奇跡的に救出されたとの記事があった。森林から伐採された木材
の大部分は日本向けに輸出されたものだろう。外国での台風被害の話だろ、俺たち
には全然関係ないよ、とは言い切れない仕組みの世界にわたしたちは住んでいる。
[THE FIGHT OF HIS LIFE] は、旧フセイン政権下で Oil-for-Food program を主導
した国連のスキャンダル記事。イラク戦争をめぐって対米批判を繰りかえしてきた
コフィ・アナン事務局長が窮地に立たされているが、彼の息子、Kojo がスイス企
業からコンサルタント料として毎月２５００ドルを受け取っていたという件も記事
を読む限り、大したことではなさそうだ。もちろん私たちには真相は闇でそのうち
手打ちが行われるだろう。ＩＭＦや世銀に限らず国連などの国際機関がかなりアヤ
シイ組織であるという側面を持っていることは国際機関のコンサルタントと称する
複数の人物に何度か会ったわたしの経験からも、またベストセラーとなった「神々
の指紋」の著者、グレアム・ハンコックが１０年以上前に著した「援助貴族は貧困
に巣喰う」という本を読んでも容易に想像がつく。要は「国連」、「国際世論」、
「国際援助」といった言葉の魔術にだまされずどういう事態が実際に進行している
かを見抜くことだ。米政権の保守勢力が対米批判を繰り返すアナンにお灸をすえた
のではなかろうかなアナンちゃって。
[THE LONG MISTAKE] は今週のカバーストーリーでタイム誌によるジェンキンス氏
独占インタビューに基づいた記事。久しぶりに [SUPERSUMMARY] に取り組もうかと
思いましたが、日曜朝の、関口宏『サンデーモーニング』でもこのタイム誌の記事
が取り上げられていたので意欲が失せました。横田めぐみさんの遺骨が偽物である
ことが判明して経済制裁を求める声が高まっているというが本当にそうなのだろう
か。拉致された家族の人々の心情は察するに余りあるが経済制裁が事態を打開させ
る道筋だとはわたしには思えない。ではこのような嘘に嘘を重ねてきた相手にどう
対処すべきだと思うのかと問われれば返答に窮してしまうけれど。
[HOW PUMPED UP IS BASEBALL?] は大リーグのステロイドスキャンダルに関する記
事。上の Borowitz Report もこの件と先のＮＢＡの乱闘事件を組み合わせた内容
だが毎回よく笑わせてもらえる。Borowitz氏の乗りで、何ごとも笑い飛ばしてスイ
スイスーイと今週も「波乗りジョニー」で乗り切るぜ。
