3<J>: Yep. Ninobe-san, when you hold a meeting, do you have some
particular ground rules that you have when doing it?
4<N>: Uh-huh. During my 20 plus years of business experience, I
really found this rule very effective. Two things: one is the time
management. Usually people allocate time to each agenda...
5<J>: OK.
6<N>: ... 10 minutes, 15 minutes, sometimes 20-30 minutes. Do we
have ... we used to have a card at the meeting table, which says "5
minutes left," "3 minutes left," "time out."
7<J>: OK.
8<N>: So a meeting facilitator or speaker needs to be always
conscious of the time, and that was very effective.
9<J>: I see.
10<N>: The other rule is to categorize meeting agenda into three
categories.
11<J>: OK.
12<N>: That is really making sure that everybody understands the
objective of a particular agenda. One is information sharing, and
discussion, and the last is decision making.
13<J>: OK.
14<N>: So for information sharing, we really try to share
information, people have one same information...
15<J>: Right.
16<N>: And second, discussion is really to make uh... meeting
participants express their ideas, brainstorm, discuss.
17<J>: OK.
18<N>: And the third is really to make a decision at the end of 10,
15 minutes, we need to make a decision. If that's... those three
categories are clear, we know what we need to do.
19<J>: I see.

20<J>: Yeah, I think you are right. Meetings would be a lot more
efficient if we do that. But Ninobe-san, another question -- what
do you think is the most important thing for a facilitator when
leading a meeting?
21<N>: OK I think there are three important points the facilitator
needs to pay attention to.
22<J>: OK.
23<N>: The one is asking the right questions. By asking (the) right
questions, people express their opinions and, I think, they feel
that making contribution to the meeting by expressing their ideas.
24<A & J>: Uh-huh.
25<N>: And (the) second point is confirming people's understanding.
There are a lot of expressions, opinions, ideas at the meeting. I
think it is important to have people understand the same.
26<J>: OK
27<N>: The third point is how you close the meeting. There are a lot
of discussions, opinions, ideas but I think it's important to close
the meeting by confirming actual steps...
28<J>: OK
29<N>: ... what we need to do over the next several months, what we
need to do over the next three weeks.
30<J>: Uh-huh. OK

32<J>: All right. The first expression is, "Sounds like a winner.
33<J>: Sounds good. Looks good. That'll work. といってもいいですね。
34<J>: That's right. Ninobe-san, positive feedback in meetings is
really important. What do you think about that?
35<N>: Yes, I think it's very important to provide positive feedback
to any opinions. I think it's respect to the people to confirm and
understand their ideas.
36<J>: OK. The next one is, "I guesstimate that we have only about
another ten days to go before installation will be complete."
37<J>: That's right.

夏季特別講習でアメリカ人が来てレッスンをしてくれています。私はこ
どもたちにアイスクリームを用意し、pamper、甘やかしているだけです。
はっはっは！ちびっ子はかわいいです！
この後のクラスはちょっと手強い。小学校高学年なのですが、いっち
ょまえに講師の評価をします。「今回のネイティブはいまいちだね！」
なんて口をきくんですよ。この年齢になると、自分たちの意思がかなり
はっきりして、「えーーっ！またネイティブレッスゥゥ〜ン？さなえのレッ
スンのほうがいいなぁ〜。」 私は喜んでいいのやら……。何とも複雑
でございます。
今回のネイティブは、かなりいいはずなのですが、さて、どうなること
やら。
