  Career Activist (6)

1<S>: Now, we are back to the topic of work-life balance. What is 
your take on this, Susan?

2<I>: Well, I am definitely not a workaholic, but I like the term 
Jay Tyson used to describe himself -- a "career activist." I look 
for new and interesting opportunities to further my career, but not 
at the expense of my health or my relationships with my friends and 
family.

3<S>: Do you find it a challenge to balance your professional and 
private lives?

4<I>: Oh, I'm lucky in that my career allows for a lot of 
flexibility. Well, maybe it's not entirely luck. I've worked hard to 
create a career that allows me to take on a variety of interesting 
projects, while, still being able to pay the bills and have control 
of my schedule for the most part.

5<S>: Do you work a lot of overtime?

6<I>: That's a good question, and when I worked full-time for a 
Japanese corporation, I often worked overtime, but not nearly as 
often or as long as my Japanese colleagues did. I worked overtime 
when I had an urgent project, but I just couldn't see the point in 
making several hours of overtime in normal part of my workday. I 
worked hard, but I knew that I wasn't going to spend my entire 
career at that company, so I suppose I didn't have as much at stake 
as my colleagues did.

7<S>: Overtime is a fact of life in Japanese business. How about in 
the U.S.?

8<I>: Well, the U.S. has its fair share of workaholics, who enjoy 
putting in extra hours. But I think for the most part, Americans 
work much less overtime than their Japanese counterparts. When I was 
growing up, my dad made it home by 6:30 or 7:00 most nights, even 
with the 45-minute commute. He had a challenging job and a very 
successful career, but he made a point of coming home early enough 
to spend time with our family.

That type of situation isn't unusual in the U.S. Many of my friends 
and family, all hard workers, tell me that they leave the office at 
the end of the business day, and that means 5:00 or 5:30 for the 
most part. Actually a lot of Americans leave early precisely because 
they are career activists.

9<S>: What do you mean?

10<I>: Well, I would say that most Americans take an active role in 
their own professional development. Of course, that means looking 
for opportunities to advance during office hours, but it also means 
taking the time to network and to take courses after hours as well. 
I know many people who have taken continuing education courses at 
night to help their careers or perhaps to prepare to move into a new 
career.

11<S>: Jay Tyson mentioned weekend getaways, exercise and 
acupuncture are some ways to release stress and maintain a good 
quality of life. How about you, Susan?

12<I>: Oh, I agree wholeheartedly with the things Jay mentioned. I 
am a big fan of massage, especially "shiatsu." And I think that 
acupuncture is another great way to bring your body back into 
balance. Now, exercise is another great stress reliever. I'm an 
on-again-off-again runner. I've run a couple of marathons in the 
past, but I also go for long periods when I don't do it at all. Now, 
recently I've started again and it's been nice to rediscover how 
relaxing and energizing a good run can be, especially after a hard 
day's work.

  Word Watching

■ career activist
13) Now, when you hear the word "activist," it usually does have a 
somewhat political connotation to it. You might hear about an 
"activist" judge, who tries to influence politics or policy uh... 
through their decisions. But "career activist" is a nice, positive 
type of expression to..., I guess, to replace "workaholic" in some 
ways. It refers to someone who takes a very active role in managing 
their career. So it's better to be a "career activist" than a 
"workaholic."

■ one and all
14) So "one and all" is just another way of saying "everyone," and 
it's often used at the beginning of a speech or a presentation. 
"Greetings, one and all, and welcome to the conference."

■ kick up one's heels
15) So to "kick up one's heels" means "to go out and have a great 
time," perhaps to relieve stress. It's often used after you've 
finished something that might be very hard or very stressful in some 
ways, maybe a hard day's work, you really need to go out and kick up 
your heels.

■ burnout
16) Now this is a very common word and it can be used as a noun or a 
verb. You often hear people saying "be careful not to burn out," and 
it refers perhaps to students who study so hard that they just get 
tired and they don't, you know, they might want to quit school or 
not study anymore. Um... it's also often used for people who are 
about to quit their jobs, perhaps they've worked too hard and have 
gotten too stressed out and they just want a break or they want to 
change careers.

■ honcho
17) I think it is true that most Americans would probably assume 
"honcho" comes from Spanish rather than Japanese, but it's another 
great example of the way that words are borrowed from other 
languages and put into English. Um, so "honcho" refers to the boss 
and you might also hear someone refer to the "head honcho" meaning 
the big boss, I guess.

■ workaholic
18) If you hear "-aholic" at the end of a word, um... it's sometimes 
casually used to refer to someone who overdoes something. So a 
"chocoholic" is someone who eats far too much chocolate.

shopaholic = 買い物中毒

■ be stuck in a rut
19) So to be "stuck in a rut" means that you are doing the same old 
routine and this can refer to either something to do with your job 
or just your life in general. For example, if you are going to work 
and then just going home and watching TV every day, you might say, 
"Oh, I'm really stuck in a rut. I need to go and join some club or 
maybe take some classes to get out of it."

much time they were spending with the kids or even how much time
they were spending together. So, to try to help themselves feel less

シアトルからいらした人をガイドしました。Tokyo Free Guide というと
ころで日本にいらしゃる観光客にボランティアで東京をご案内すると
いうことを始めて数年。最近は口コミで東京に行ったらこの人に連絡
をとってみろ、と直接メールが入り込むこともあります。と、いうわけで
都合のつく数時間、東京をご案内することになりました。

歩き出して数分、アメリカに行ったことある？というのでオレゴンに昨
年初めて行きました。と言うと、オレゴンのどこ？という話になりまし
た。姉妹都市交流団の一員としてポートランドから車で3時間ほどくだ
ったところのローズバーグという小さな街へ行ったというと、なんと、そ
の方、そこに2年間ほど住んだことがあると、しかも、その姉妹都市交
流事業に携わったことがあると……。共通の知人の名前が出てくるわ、
出てくるわ。

初めて会った方ですよ。It's a small world!! びっくり仰天でした。
