■ for a change
1) People often do things for a change as well to refresh themselves
to look at their lives a little bit differently. But on the other
hand, people also say that you shouldn't change just for change's
sake.

■ quality time
2) Yeah, I think because both husbands and wives are spending more
time at work. They felt sort of guilty about how much time they were
spending with the kids or even how much time they were spending
together. So, to try to help themselves feel less guilty, the idea
of "quality time"-- really paying attention to each other in a
shorter amount of time -- ecame popular.

I've heard though, on the other hand, many people would say, "Oh,
if you think back to the time when mothers tended to stay home
with their kids, they didn't spend their much time directly together
having quality time. Usually the kids were out playing or doing
something in their bedrooms, and the mother was doing whatever
she always did at home." So some people say, "Well, the idea of
quality time is really to help working people's guilt for not being 
home
as much as they used to be."

■ no wonder that
3) In fact, I think if people begin with "no wonder," they would
almost always drop the "that." If they make a full sentence, "It's
no wonder," then depending on the person, they might use "that,"
they might not.

■ take a break
4) Hmm.... There is another phrase in English with a different verb,
"give me a break," which means "lay off," "stop it," "don't pester
me."

5) And because we also use that phrase rather idiomatically, it
could easily be misunderstood if you walked up to your boss or your
supervisor and said," Give me a break?" If you want to take a break,
you would probably have to ask your supervisor, "Can I take a
break?"

■ No!
6) "No" pronounced that way, "no!" often is a response to some kind
of juicy gossip and it means, "Oh, I ... that is very shocking! Tell
me more."

■ Hey, I'm from Missouri.
7) It probably sounds pretty funny. But in the U.S., Missouri is
known as the "Show-Me State," meaning you have to show people
from Missouri that things are true. They won't just believe it if 
you
tell them.

■ That blows my mind.
8) This one sounds a little bit old-fashioned. I think it became
popular in the 1960s.

■ I'm gobsmacked [gobstruck].
9) Yeah, I don't think I've heard it, either, but I've read about
it. It's being discussed these days. Apparently, it's becoming more
popular in the U.K. It came originally from some local dialect. And
for English speakers, it really has sort of a funny sound. I think
that's why it's becoming popular.

＜編集後記＞

昨日の夕方は突然ものすごい雷雨がありました。

雲行きがあやしくなった頃、娘に電話して、家の全部の窓を閉めるよ
うに頼みました。トイレやお風呂場の小窓があけっぱなしになっていた
ので。　そうこうしているうちにバリバリと雷が鳴り出し、さすがの娘も
「ちょっと電話切らないで話していて…」と言っていました。

生徒には落ち着くまで教室に来るのを見合わせるようにと電話した
のですが、ひとりはすでに出たあと。びしょびしょになって入ってきまし
た。お母さんが車で送ってくれたのですが、駐車場から教室のドアを
開けるまでの数メールでぐっしょりです。

教室においてあった予備用のTシャツと短パンに着替えてもらい、着
ていた洋服と靴はドライヤーで乾かし、外は嵐なのに、笑い転げた楽
しい授業になりました。

停電はするわ電話は不通になるわ、コンピューターのサーバーはダ
ウンするわで、日頃から電力に依存している自分を改めて感じました。

固定電話がおかしくなったので、携帯で連絡を取ろうと思ったら、こち
らもかからなくなってしまいました。きっと心配した人たちがいっせい
に電話をし始めて回線がパンクしたのでしょう。

30分ほどで嵐もおさまり静かになりましたが、いろいろなところで足止
めをくらったり、びしょ濡れになったりした人が続出したことと思われ
ます。自然の力には逆らえません。
