to cut business expenses in general.

I think it's interesting that Potter mentions "shoeshine" because I 
think it would be pretty hard to find a place to have your shoes 
shined if you are not doing it yourself these days in the U.S.

3) Ooh... and those are pretty high service type hotels. Most places 
I've stayed in, if they have anything at all, they have a strip of 
paper that you can use to kind of polish up your shoes.

4) penny-pinching
To "penny-pinch" is to save money. It's looking for ways so that you 
can spend less money than you've been spending. Depending on how you 
use it, it can be somewhat positive if you are good at it. But 
generally people don't want to have to pinch pennies.

5) reimbursement
"Reimbursement" has always been one of my favorite words. Not only 
does it mean money coming back but the "re" part means "again," and 
"im" part means "in" and "burse" means "purse" or "wallet" or where 
you keep your money. So "reimbursement" means "putting money back 
into your pocket"

6) 大型車 = gas-guzzler

7) bells and whistles
"Bells and whistles" is an idiom that means the "fancy or showy 
options." They are usually not the substance of whatever you are 
doing or buying or renting.

8) In the U.S., you would call it standard equipment.

9) Cortez, of course, is speaking from the point of view of the 
company.

10) reach for the check
If you "reach for the check," you are indicating that you are going 
to pay the check. The other people don't need to chip in. And you 
can use this phrase whether you are talking about your personal 
money like if you go out with friends or if you go out with business 
colleagues. If you "reach for the check," it's coming out of your 
expense account. If you want to do this in words, you can say, "I've 
got the check" that's telling everybody that you are going to pay 
for it.

＜編集後記＞

3ヶ月という長いホームステイを終えて帰ってきた高校生。楽しかった
と顔を輝かせていましたが、最初は不安で大変だったそうです。空港
に到着し、それぞれホストファミリーのお宅に別れ、ホストペアレンツ
に会ったとたん、その緊張は最高にピークに達しました。

考えてみたら、16歳、それまで海外で暮らしたことはありません。今で
こそ海外は決して遠いものはなくなりましが、映画の中でしか見たこと
のないアメリカ人。その人たちが今自分の目の前に立っている。いくら
英語を選考しているとはいえ、まだそんなに話せるわけではない。

そう思ったとたん、涙がとめどもなくあふれてきてしまったそうです。到
着した初日です。これからどうなるんだろうと不安がピークに達したと
き、彼女に近寄り、彼女を温かくハグする人がいました。それは、

5歳のホストシスターでした。

泣いている高校生をハグし、「泣かないで」と言い、その後もずっとそば
にいて励ましてくれたそうです。

これが何を意味するかわかりますね。泣いている子がいたらハグし、
Don't cry とやさしく声をかけ励ます。5歳の女の子がそれを知っている
のです。そこにいる16歳の女の子の面倒を見ているのです。

そう、この5歳のお嬢さんにそれを教えてきたのはまぎれもなくご両親
です。その家庭での3ヶ月が、この高校生のその後の将来を変えた瞬
間と言ってもいいでしょう。

この子はきっと英語を使った仕事に就くでしょう。この子があきらめな
い限り。私はそんな経験を与えた彼女の高校のプログラムに感謝しま
す。人の人生にかかわるプログラム、見事です。
