1<J>: That's right, but today, let's start off with the message from
New York City.

2<G>: Greetings from the Big Apple. My name is John Gillespie. It's
a pleasure to work with NHK to develop the series of programs. We
want to create dialogs that are realistic and practical, and
demonstrate how people interact in English when doing business in
New York City where I live. We hope that you will find these
programs easy to listen to and useful. I would like to wish you a
very good learning experience.

3<J>: Thank you, John.

4<J>: Welcome back to the program. Thanks for joining us.

5<M>: Oh, thank you for invite (inviting) me again.

6<J>: Interesting stuff. I noted that uh... you've also worked for a
Japanese company as well and now an American one. Do you see a
difference just how feedback takes place in a Japanese company and
an American company?

7<M>: Yes, I can see a slightly difference between the Japanese
com.... at the way of the feedback in a Japanese company and a U.S.
company.

8<J>: OK.  All right.

9<M>: The difference is that um... I think this is because uh... the
nationality.

10<J>: OK.

11<M>: And a U.S. company tends to provide much more positive
feedback than the negative feedback. But the Japanese company even
if it's a negative feedback, they are trying to communicate as the
item to be improved.

12<J>: Uh-uh. I see.

13<J>: You mentioned that nationality might be a reason for the
difference in how feedback takes place. Now, usually most companies
operate using certain cultural rules in each place. Do you see
anything that's unique to an American company and a Japanese
company, not just their nationality but anything specific that might
be for this difference in feedback?

14<M>: I'm not sure if it's directly linked to the culture of the
feedback, but uh... one of the idea I raised is that the difference
in a labor market...

15<J>: OK

16<M>: ... in the U.S., in uh... Japan.

17<J>: OK.

18<M>: Compared to the U.S. employee, Japanese employee tends to
stay longer.

19<J>: Uh-huh. I see. So it's... maybe it's more important in the
U.S. to give positive feedback so that people don't leave the
company. Is that right?

20<M>: Not to leave the company.

21<J>: That's a good idea. I see. I understand.

22<J>: Now, we'll check some other useful expressions in today's
skit.

23<J>: The first expression is, "Oh, I don't mean like in school."

24<J>: Yeah, Masui-san, I think you probably use these phrases very
often. What kind of occasion do you use this phrase or do you have
any other phrases that you usually use?

25<M>: In case I ask something and I feel the person looks
misunderstanding, I use this phrase.

26<J>: OK. I see.

27<J>: OK, the next one is, "Not at all."

28<J>: Are there any other phrases that you might use?

29<M>: Yes, I use, "It's my pleasure," uh... quite often, especially
in the business scene.

30<J>: OK.

31<M>: Especially that someone ask me to do something.

32<J>: Uh-huh.

33<M>: Because in the business scene, it's a give-and-take.

34<J>: Uh-huh.

35<M>: So, in case I demonstrate, I'm happy to do it. Next time I
ask him or her, they will happy to do it.

36<J>: I see.
