入門ビジネス英語 Tuesday, June 24
1<J>: Hi, there, Yoshida-san. Nice to see you again.
2<M>: Nice to see you again, too.
3<J>: Thanks.
4<J>: Yeah. When you point out problems at work, do you also think
about the solutions at the same time?
5<M>: Well, I think it depends.
6<J>: Uh-huh.
7<M>: I would say it would be more professional and constructive if
I have some solutions to suggest when I say my opinion about it.
8<J>: Uh-huh.
9<M>: But not always I have my solutions so I can ask "What do you
think?" "I felt this, this, this...." "But I don't know how to solve
it. But what do you think? What would you suggest?" That's also OK.
10<J>: I see.
-------------------
11<J>: Yeah. What do you pay attention to when you communicate with
non-Japanese?
12<M>: Well, when I look back, say, 20 years ago, most likely I was
communicating in English to the other people from the States, from
U.K. or Australia. But nowadays, I communicate in English with
Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Koreans, and many people from different
countries. So that means that I need to understand their cultural
background as well when we communicate in English.
13<J>: Right.
14<M>: So this is happening because the market and then the life is
becoming more boundary-less and more global. And this trend will
continue, I believe. So I think it is very important to be able to
understand the culture of these people who are speaking English. So,
for example, say, you asked me "Would I prepare solutions when I
make my comments out?"
15<J>: Uh-huh. Yeah.
16<M>: And... the one solution may work in one culture, but it may
not work in another culture. It may even... rather embarrass some
people if it's too straightforward. But if I say too politely or not
to the point very succinctly, other culture people may be very
frustrated.
17<J>: Right.
18<M>: So, that kind of cultural understanding would become more
important.
19<J>: OK
-----------------------
20<J>: Exactly. Right.
21<J>: Thank you.
-------------------------
Other Useful Expressions
-------------------------
22<J>: Now, we'll check some other useful expressions from today's
skit.
23<J>: The first one is, "Not speaking in Japanese is one way."
24<J>: Uh-huh. What do you think of this?
25<M>: Yes, I think so, too, especially in the States, but as I
mentioned earlier that the English speaking also gets influenced by
the culture so this may vary depending with the culture.
26<J>: OK
27<J>: Uh-huh. All right. The next one is, "We can't always catch
what is said in English."
28<J>: That's right.
29<J>: I completely agree with that. It's very important to express
your opinion. Don't you think so, Yoshida-san?
30<M>: In general, yes. And it also depends on how you express it.
In my experience, in the States, especially articulation was very,
very important.
31<J>: I see.
--------------------
32<J>: Yeah, Yoshida-san, thanks so much for coming to the program.
How was the recording this past month? Did you have fun?
33<M>: Yes, absolutely.
34<J>: Great.
35<M>: And uh... actually this opportunity gave me the time to
reflect up on myself how my English is.
36<J & A>: Uh-huh. Hmm...
37<M>: Was it uh, appropriate? Of course, not always. But that
helped me to think how I am speaking in English to other people. And
I'm hoping that something that I have said in the program this month
would help many people to be able to become more fluent, even more
fluent to speak in English to communicate with many other people.
Thank you very much.
38<J>: I'm glad the show was helpful to you Yoshida-san and I hope
it's all for everybody else out there who wants to learn how to
communicate with people not just Americans but all over the world
using English.
39<M>: Great.
40<J>: Take care, everyone. Bye-bye.
41<M & A>: Good-bye.
