2<M>: Thank you.

3<J>: Let me just say I have major problems with side conversations 
in meetings. Miki, you've been in meetings in many different 
international environments.

4<M>: Yes.

5<A>: Right.

6<J>: What's your feeling about people having side conversations in 
their native language?

7<M>: I don't like that, either.

8<J>: OK.

9<M>: A group of Japanese people make side conversations in the 
English-speaking conference.

10<J>: Uh-huh.

11<M>: In terms of the fairness point of view for all participants, 
it's not fair that some people cannot understand what's been 
discussed there. It sounds like a secret that they didn't want other 
people to understand.

12<J>: Right.

13<M>: Even if it's not intended, it gives impression like that.

14<J>: Uh-huh.

15<M>: So, when we need to explain to somebody who doesn't really 
understand English about some key things which has been brought up 
to the table, I would say, "Would you mind taking a couple of 
minutes for me to explain this to this person in Japanese?"

16<J>: Uh-huh.

17<M>: But I would try not to make it happen too often.

18<J>: Understood.

19<M>: インドのパーティで奥さんが　I use too much of salt and too 
much of sugar and too much of vinegar. っておっしゃるんですね。　
What she really meant was, "I use a lot of sugar and a lot of vinegar 
and a lot of salt." ということであって別に too much ではないのですね。

20<J>: Now, we'll check some other useful expressions from today's 
skit. OK, the first expression is, "Those side conversations with 
other Japanese may have been effective for you."

21<J>: That's right.

22<J>: Uh-huh. What do you think, Miki?

23<M>: Yes, I agree. I think it shows the attitude that you are 
trying to understand the other person.

24<J>: Uh-huh.

25<J>: OK, the next one is, "That would make for more effective 
meetings."

would make for more effective learning for you, so keep listening.
