3<J>: All right, everyone. Let's have fun.

4<J>: How's business? Mine is good. We are staying busy this week. I
hope yours is good too.

5<J>: Thanks for coming again today.

6<M>: Thank you.

7<M>: Somebody work... who is working for me has got a problem, but
this was not disclosed to me until the last moment, which I couldn't
take the action to rescue it.

8<J>: Sure.

9<M>: Then I would say, "I would have appreciated if you have
escalated to me a little earlier," rather than saying "You should
have escalated to me earlier." I think it's a little milder.

10<J>: Yeah, a little milder, a little bit more indirect, but it
still gets the point across.

11<J>: Now, Miki, you've worked for both Japanese and Western
companies as well. Do you see a difference in the companies
themselves?

12<M>: Well, one of the big differences that I have observed is the
time to take for decision making.

13<J>: Uh-huh.

14<M>: For example, when I was working for a non-Japanese firm, it
takes time to have the final decisions from the headquarters ...

15<J>: I see.

16<M>: ... because they are in New York or London and in other
countries.

17<J>: Uh-huh.

18<M>: On the contrary, Shinsei Bank is headquartered in Tokyo. So,
we would like to make a major decision, it's a very um... quick
decision because we reach the top level of management immediately.
That's the biggest difference that I ... .

19<J>: I see. That's interesting because my impression is that
decisions are made much more quickly by Western corporations than
they are by Japanese corporations.

20<M>: That is yes and no.

21<J>: OK.

22<M>: It does take time to circulate certain things within the
Japanese company. But when consensus is reached among the people who
are actually doing the work, getting the approval or endorsement of
the senior management is quicker if the headquarters is locally
here.

23<J>: I see.

24<J>: Miki, you've also worked in a few different industries in the
past Um... what? Manufacturing, right? Consulting, financial
services and banking right now. What do you see is a difference
between some of these if you can point something concretely for us?

25<M>: OK. It's an interesting question. It's the way... the
vacation days, holidays.

26<J>: Vacation! All right.

27<M>: Is it ... maybe interesting to you and everybody to find out
that there is a recommendation by the financial services agency,
FSA, 金融庁 in Japan, the employees of a bank is recommended to take
two-week long vacation. If not possible, one-week vacation twice.

28<J>: Why is that?

29<M>: One of the effective ways to find out fraud if there is any
within a company.

30<J>: Oh?

31<M>: Because if the same person is in charge of the same thing for
a long time, if there is any fraud done by this particular person,
it is very difficult to find it. However, if another person is
covering his or her job, there is a chance to find out any fraud if
there is any.

32<J>: Interesting point. Yeah, OK.

33<J>: It's very good idea.

34<J>: Now, we'll check some other useful expressions from today's
skit. The first one is, "I was trying not to be so blunt or impolite
by saying 'now'."

35<M>: I was only trying to make you happy, but did it upset you?

36<J>: OK, good example. The next one is, "What should I use in this
case?"

37<J>: "What should I say?" とか "What should I write here?" などいろ
いろ使えますね。 Do you usually use this phrase?

38<M>: Yeah, very often, actually. "What should I write here?" or I
can say that "What am I expected to write here?"

39<J>: It's very useful, right?

40<J>: And we hope to learn more about the financial world in Japan
the rest of the show, so...
