1<J>: Hi again, Miki, welcome back.

2<M>: Thank you very much. Great to be here.

3<J>: Great.

4<J>: Yeah, Miki, what kind of misunderstandings do you see in 
business that some Japanese can cause in conversation?

5<M>: Um... I guess one of the very serious ones that I have 
observed in the past was the Japanese smile. It's a very mysterious 
smile when you are (in a) difficult situation. It's called "照れ笑い" 
or "ごまかし笑い" in Japanese.

6<J>: Right.

7<M>: To milden up the situation, often Japanese just smile. But 
that can make the other person upset...

8<J>: I see.

9<M>: ... if this person is serious.

10<J>: I think, you know, very often foreigners say, "I wonder what 
a Japanese is thinking."

11<A>: Hmm...

12<J>: I've been in Japan for 13 years, and I basically know what 
the Japanese person is thinking by looking at their face. But if you 
are not used to looking at a Japanese person's smiling thing, 
"Uh-oh! He's smiling. There is a problem." You might not know what's 
happening.

13<J>: Yeah. There does seem to be a difference. So, Miki, what do 
you see as a difference when you are asking something of someone in 
English or Japanese?

14<M>: Yes, I think there are differences. For example, in Japanese 
when I ask something to somebody, I would say, "すみませんが,""恐れ入
りますが,"  like a "sumimasen" culture base. They "please do this."

15<J>: Right. The apology culture.

16<M>: Apology, yes. But when I write the same thing in English, I 
would say "Knowing that you are busy, I would appreciate that you 
could do this for me." So more like a "thank-you" culture base?.

17<J>: A thank-you cul... .OK, I see.

18<M>: And it is interesting, if I write the e-mail in both Japanese 
and English, I would say the same thing in the, uh, "すみませんが" 
in Japanese but  "Thank you" in the English expression...

19<J>: Uh, interesting.

20<M>: ... within the same e-mail.

21<J>: Yeah.

22<J>: Now, we'll check some other useful expressions from today's 
skit.

23<J>: The first one is, "You felt I was threatening you in my 
e-mail message."

24<J>: That's right.

25<J>: That's right. Do you agree with that?

26<M>: Yes, I do.

27<J>: OK. Let's try the next one. "You might want to..." and "It 
would be good if you could..."

28<M>: "Based on our conversation yesterday, I am expecting the 
report today." "To what I am understanding we have agreed to prepare 
this by the end of this... today. Will you be able to do it?"

29<J>: いきなり "Give me the report." とか "Send the report." と言ったら
本当に失礼ですよね？

for today.
