1<J>: So, Abe-san, in this week's skit, it's a conversation at a
reception.

2<Ab>: Uh-huh.

3<J>: Do you think there are any points that people should pay
attention to when developing their human network?

4<Ab>: Sure. I would recommend two things first. First one is "don't
be shy."

5<A & J>: Ohhh...    Uh-huh.

6<Ab>: I think, you know, Japanese tend to be shy because, you know,
silence is golden.

7<A>: Yeah, that's right.

8<J>: Ah, yeah, I got it.

9<Ab>: And the second one is "be relax."　

10<J>: Well, how about when you meet people for the first time, in
that kind of situation, what are some easy to ask questions?

11<Ab>: Yes, I have some, you know, appropriate topics...

12<A & J>: Uh-huh.  OK.

13<Ab>: ... to in order to, you know, open the conversations. For
example, weather, sports, vacation. I think, you know, American(s)
like vacation.

14<J>: Oh, I love vacation.

15<Ab>: And food, cuisine, this is my most favorite topics, the news
the headline in recent and famous people and any, you know,
difference culture between the, you know, U.S. culture and the
Japanese cultures.

16<J>: Yeah.

17<Ab>: I think they are, those, you know topics will work.

18<J>: I see.

19<J>: Abe-san, you've done so well at Intel. I wonder if, uh... if
you went into another industry, how would you have done or what
would you have done?

20<Ab>: That's (a) good question, I think.

21<A>: Wow, hoo...

22<Ab>: I was curious to join mass media industry.

23<J>: Mass media, OK.

24<Ab>: Such as a radio and a television, such things.　So, I
wished, you know, I could become the announcers.

25<J>: Is that right? So, why did you choose Intel?

26<A>: Yeah.

27<Ab>: I love technology. That's why I choosed (chose) the Intel.

28<J>: I see.

29<J>: And lastly, I want to know for the people listening to the
show who want to do business in English, what kind of a message do
you have for them?

30<Ab>: Uh-huh. My message is to speak in English fluently is not
good enough to do the business. There're some, you know, other
skill(s) such as listening, build relationship, presenting,
persuasion, debate and so on.

31<J>: Yeah

32<Ab>: So looking at the present environment in the world, the
world is becoming to be the flat.

33<J>: Right.

34<Ab>: Right? So, IT makes innovation happen to avoid borders.

35<J>: Uh-huh.

36<Ab>: Therefore, the business people must be expected to work
together across geographies and the countries anywhere, any times.

37<J & A>: Uh-huh.  Right.

38<Ab>: So, I would say the business is becoming globally.

39<J>: OK.

40<J>: Absolutely.

skit. The first expression is, "I see that you're in IT."

45<J>: Ah, that's really good. Yeah. "Do you mind if....?" "Would it
be OK if...?" yeah, it's about the same. Yeah.

complete agreement with that.

＜編集後記＞

アメリカから客人が来ていました。またの再会を約束して成田行きの
バスまで見送りました。彼が初めて日本に来たのは4、5年前。大学で
日本語を勉強していた彼は、あるルートを通じて、私の教室にやって
くることになりました。生徒さんのお宅にホームステイさせていただき
数週間過ごしたのですが、以来、日本が大好きになり、毎年のように
戻ってきています。

大学を卒業した彼、今回は日本で働ける道はないかと職探しにやっ
てきました。あるエージェントを紹介し、なんとか職も入りそうな感触を
掴んだものの、これからの人生設計をしないといけないと、何だか深
刻そうに帰っていきました。

ま、そのうちまた来るでしょう。
