  Learning to Talk the Talk (5)

■ translate into
1) You can talk about all kinds of things "translating into" some
other things. In the business world, you could say, if we raise our
spending by a certain percent, it will translate into a certain
amount of extra profits.

2) In English, often people use the word "nest egg" to refer to
savings.

■ in line with
3) "Gross revenue" is all the money coming in. Usually, businesses
compare gross revenue with net profits so that they can see how much
money they are spending to get those profits.

■ fret about
4) I've heard advice that you should think about the worst-case
scenario so you know how you handle it. But then you can be happy
because usually the worst case doesn't occur.

■ Take it easy.
5) The opposite "take it hard" is also a phrase used in English. It
means that when something bad happens, the person feels the impact
very strongly.

■ There, there. / Shh-shh.
6) "There, there," you would probably use if someone is very upset
and you are trying to calm them down, maybe patting them on the
shoulder or rubbing their back a little bit. The same thing with
"shh-shh," although that one, because it's not really a word, you
might use with babies or even animals.

■ Don't lose your cool.
7) It's similar to saying, "Don't get upset," or "Keep your poise."

■ Everybody's nervous at first. You need have no fear.
8) Everyone's got butterflies at first.

■ Have confidence in yourself. They won't eat you alive.
9) And then the nervous person who isn't persuaded by what you just
said will say, "No, they'll kill me first."

■ Never mind. Everything will look better in the morning.
10) Sometimes people add the phrase, "Sleep on it. Everything will
look better in the morning."

■ You may rest assured that I'll take good care of it.
11) "You may rest assured" は書き言葉でも使います。話し言葉で
も使いますか？

12) I think you probably could say it, but it does sound very
formal.

■ Calm your fears. I assure you we will deliver as promised.
13) This almost has the opposite effect. It sounds like there was a
huge problem and the listener is probably still pretty skeptical
about actually getting the delivery.

何度となくこの編集後記でお伝えしていますが、私がディクテーション
を続けていられるのは、この画面の向こう側にいるあなた、そう、読
