1<J>: Hi, Abe-san, how are you doing today?

2<Ab>: I'm very fine. Thank you. How about you, Jason, Aiko?

3<A>: Good.

4<J>: I'm pretty good. Yeah. So, today's topic is how to get 
information from a colleague in a different department. You must 
have many colleagues, Abe-san, who can only speak English. How do 
you get information from them?

5<Ab>: Yes. I have a huge chunk of native colleague(s) across 
department(s) in the world because my company Intel has about 80,000 
employees in total as of today. And we are globally doing business 
and operation.

6<J>: Abe-san, 80,000 people is a lot of people. What do these 
people do?

7<Ab>: Actually, 80,000 people are working for a whole bunch of 
functions.

8<J>: OK, for example, what are the functions?

9<Ab>: Yes, engineering group, manufacturing, sales, marketing, 
finance, logistics and so on.

10<J>: And so on, etc, etc.

11<J>: So, I guess that it would make sense that when YOU re asked 
for requests, it's probably important to tell YOU the reason, too, 
right?

12<Ab>: That's right. That's a... actually point here.

13<J>: How do you feel about that?

14<J>: When I got question or request without any reason, I must be 
confused what information I should provide.

15<J>: Sure.

16<Ab>: Because I want to try to (give) useful information as much 
as possible.

17<J>: Uh-huh.

18<Ab>: Because I am (a) good guy.

19<A & J>: [Laughter]

20<J>: You certainly are.

21<Ab>: So in that sense, I have to send e-mail in order to confirm 
background why that requester needs such information. However, I 
feel it's a waste of time to send such e-mail.

22<A>: Hmm....

23<Ab>: So I can avoid it if requester put that information at first 
e-mail.

24<J>: Uh-huh.

Other Useful Expressions

25<J>: Now, we'll check some other useful expressions in today's 
skit. The first one is, "Do you have a minute?"

26<J>: Uh-huh. That's right. So you would use "Do you have a 
minute?" の代わりに、"Got a minute?" もしくは "Got a second?" とも言えます。

27<Ab>: 私はどちらかと言うと "May I bother you now?" というフレーズ
を使うこともあります。

28<J>: Ah, OK. All right. The next phrase is, "I know you are busy, 
and I apologize for taking your time."

29<J>: I apologize for something something ...ing は謝罪するときによく 

使う表現。

30<Ab>: Yeah. Jason-san, I like this phrase actually because, you 
know, sounds being very polite...

31<J & A>: Uh-huh.

32<Ab>: ... and very modest.

33<J>: Uh-huh.

34<Ab>: Right? In order to work and play well with others, I would 
suggest to tell the truth and apologize.

35<J>: Uh-huh.

36<Ab>: And add one more phrase, "How do I make it right?" after the 
apologize to improve next time.

37<J>: Very interesting.

39<Ab>: My apologize (apologies) I'm not good English speaker, 
though...

40<J>: Abe-san, you are doing fine. The point is that we all learn 
together and I know how busy you are. So I have to just really thank 
you for all the time that you have taken and we'll see you next time 
too. OK?

English. Sometimes the "Grim Reaper" is also called the angel of
death. And if you see a character of the Grim Reaper either on TV or

sometimes dressed in a black cloak, but almost always ★[ caring →
carrying ] a scythe.

＜編集後記＞

今日のメルマガでは英文の訂正が出ましたが、今度は日本語での訂
正です。

前回のメルマガで「的を得る」という表現をつかいました。この日本語
の使い方、間違っているそうです。本当は「的を射る」が正解だそうで
す。知らずに使っていました。よく考えれば的は射るものですものね。
いやあ、参りました！　教えてくださった志村さん、どうもありがとうご
ざいます。

ネットで検索するとさまざまな見解もあるようです。「的を得る」も間違
いではないと言い出だしている人もいるようですが、まだまだ論議の
中にあるようです。うぅ〜ん、言葉って難しいですね。
