1<A>: OK, now let me introduce you our guest this month.

2<A>: Thank you for coming to our program again.

3<S>: It's my pleasure to be here.

4<J>: All right. Let me do that and hop in here.

5<J>: Basically, in English, when did you have the opportunity to
speak and have these private conversations with colleagues?

6<S>: OK. Well, there were lot of chances where I could start up
private conversations because workplace itself was very casual...

7<A&J>: Uh-huh.

8<S>: ... like, you know, people are talking everywhere, in copy
machine room or I uh... lunch time, you know, anytime.

9<J>: What kind of topics did you talk about? I'm guessing there
must be a difference between the U.S. and Japan, but maybe there is
not.

10<S>: Well, I personally don't feel there's uh, major differences
between the U.S. and Japan.

11<A>: Um...

12<S>: You know, when I was in the U.S., I often talked with my
colleague a lot of uh... just normal life outside of work...

13<A&J>: Uh-huh.

14<S>: ... such as uh... small car accidents...

15<A>: Ohhh...

16<S>: ... or yeah... terrible experience at a shopping mall... you
know, things like that.

17<A>: Hmm....

18<J>: I guess good things happened too, right?

19<S>: That's right. Yeah, exactly.

20<J>: I understand that you have kids.

21<A>: Ah... yes.

22<S>: That's right. Well, first of all, I am a father of two.

23<J>: OK.

24<S>: And my first baby was actually born in New Jersey when I was
in the United States...

25<A>: Wow!

26<J>: Is that right?

27<S>: ... in 2005, I guess.

28<J>: OK.

29<S>: So uh.... since then, I talked a lot about my kids because a
lot of my colleagues actually had young families, too. So we had so
much in common.

30<J>: I see. Is your oldest child American?

31<S>: That's right.

32<J>: Is that right? Really.

33<S>: That's right. Yes, she was born in New Jersey.

34<A>: Uh-huh.

35<S>: And she has the Japanese and American nationalities.

36<A & J>: Wow!

37<S>: She has two passports. She can stay in the U.S. as long as
she wants.

38<J>: Right.

39<A>: Oh, that's cool.

40<J>: But you can't.

41<S>: I can't.

42<A & J & S>: [Laughter.]

  Other Useful Expressions

43<J>: Now, we'll check some other useful expressions in today's
skit.

44<J>: OK. The first is "You bet!"

45<J>: That's right. OK, Shin, did you use this phrase often in the
U.S.?

46<S>: Sure. Uh... you know what, I am going to say, "You bet!"

47<J>: Uh-oh, a little bit cheesy but anyway...

48<A & S>: [Laughter]

49<S>: I think people would use this expression when they are
excited about the topic, whereas "sure" and "of course" can be used
when people did not actually think "sure."

50<J>: Yeah, I completely agree.

51<J>: That's right. The next one is "That would be great!"

52<J>: That's right.

53<S>: Would が使えないと I wouldn't be able to talk.

54<J>: So Shin, thanks for coming today. I understand that it's time
to go. So everybody, thanks for listening to our program today.
