1) Shiga decides to look for a place to live in a Japanese
community. That way it will be easier for him to settle into his new
job and new life.

2) Do you have any preferences?
She could have said "What kind of a place are you thinking of?"

3) I'd like to live in a Japanese community.
It sounds like Shiga has been doing his homework. I didn't know
there was a Japanese community in this area until I read about it in
the newspaper a couple years ago.

4) village
It might seem sort of strange to call a town or a city a "village."
To me, "village" sounds very non-American, to tell the truth, it
sounds sort of European, a small community, not really closely
connected to anything else rather rural. But in a Chicago area,
"village" is a political division. It has a technical definition. I
think it goes by the population size. I think most of the U.S.
doesn't use the word "village" in the same way.

5) Realtor
Many people use the word "Realtor" to talk about people who are in a
business of buying and selling property. You can also call them real
estate agents.

6) condos
Cortez also talks about "condos." That's short for a condominium. In
the U.S., they are usually buildings with separate residences inside
that you can buy.

7) relocation
"Relocation" is the more formal word that people probably use in the
industry or, you know, among colleagues and things like that. I
think most people, when they are speaking more casually and relaxed
with their friends, would probably just say "moving." "I know how
stressful moving can be."

8) How are you finding it?
This is kind of interesting. She uses the "i-n-g" form of the verb
here, which kind of indicates eventually. This sort of unsettled
relocation period will end. "How are you finding it?" not "How do
you find it?" which is sort of a deeper, more philosophical question
about moving.

9) And I'll bet Miami feels the same way to many Chicagoans to go
there for the first time.

10) an American way of life
I think it's interesting he chose to say "an" American way of life
instead of "the" American way of life. He seems to be aware of the
fact that, although it is all the U.S., there are many different
ways to live there.

11) There is a similar word "prosperous." But "prosperous" focuses a
little more on the monetary side of it. "Affluent" includes feeling
good and having an ample and enjoyable lifestyle.

12) This is kind of interesting. You can't really call previously
hired people "oldcomers," however.

13) Johnny-come-lately = newcomer と同じ、新参者、新人という意味

14) However, "Johnny-come-lately" tends to be used when being a
newcomer is not such a good thing.
