to the boss. I've been in Japan for 13 years. My opinion is that the
subordinates don't usually give any opinion to their boss. What do
you think about that?

8<S>: Well, my impression is that it's not necessarily true to
Japanese companies, I mean all Japanese companies. Even in the U.S.,
depending on people, negative opinions are not directly expressed to
their managers.

9<J>: Uh-huh.

10<J>: In America, my opinion is that they do that during business
hours, right?

11<J>: 仕事がおわってから go out drinking and talk with your boss
very informally, naturally. The informal conversation in the U.S.
happens at work. In Japan ....

12<J>: That's right.

13<J>: Shin, I have another question. When you want to make your
ideas become real in the company, how should you do that?

17<S>: I believe this should be like this, or like that.

much better when that happens.

19<J>: OK, then the next one is "We'll have to try once again to
clear it with headquarters."

20<S>: This needs to be approved by Tokyo as opposed to
headquarters.

21<S>: headquarters は必ず単数形なんですよね。
Headquarters thinks ...   Headquarters does

23<S>: I'm afraid so.

24<J>: Umm... do you think if we clear it with headquarters, you can
stay next month, too?

■ Butterflies. Everybody has them on their day.
21) That's right. I really like this expression. It's a great way to
describe that nervous feeling without a general ★[ rash → rush ]
that you get. And it's also kind of a cute expression. So I think it
is used a bit more by women, but men do sometimes use it as well.
