13<J>: When uh... when people are asking you, these... what types of
phrases do they use? Or do you feel that the language is different
when they ask you these things?
14<S>: One of the phrases that I think of right now is "What would
happen if... ?" "Why don't we do this or that?" "I would
recommend..."
15<S>: Indirect expressions are very common in the U.S. That's my
feeling.
16<A>: Yeah.
17<S>: And that's one of the differences before and after I lived in
the United States.
18<A>: Uh-huh.
19<S>: OK, you do it. というよりも This needs to be taken care of.
20<S>: You shouldn't do this. ではなく This shouldn't be done.
21<J>: I'm so glad you are saying this because I think many Japanese
don't feel that there is polite language in English. It's always
giving orders. But it's not. There are nice ways to ask people. 敬語とは
ちょっと違うと思うんですけれども……、It's very similar in my
opinion.
22<S>: Human nature. Yes.
23<J>: Human nature. That's right.
