■ in the blink of an eye
1) in the wink of an eye とも言います。

2) I use "blink" when I am talking about opening and closing both 
eyes at the same time. And for me, "wink" means closing only one 
eye, either one. But if you look in a dictionary, usually, if you 
look up "blink," it says, "also wink." And if you look up "wink," it 
says, "or use blink." So probably it depends on your dialect more 
than anything whether you keep that difference or not.

3) As gestures, these two verbs have somewhat different meaning. If 
you say, you told someone some surprising news, and he listened 
without "the blink of an eye, "it means he showed no reaction. On 
the other hand, a "wink," usually expresses some kind of shared 
secret or some kind of fellow feeling between the winker and the 
person who saw the wink.

■ shift into reverse gear
4) You can also use the phrase without the word "gear," "shift into 
reverse." It's often used when somebody decides what they were doing 
is not useful, not helpful, and I have to change what I am doing. So 
say, "Oh, uh, so I shifted into reverse."

■ in the doghouse with someone
5) And be careful about the "with someone" part. It doesn't mean you 
are together in the doghouse. It means you've done something that 
the other person looks at with disfavor.

6) 相手と関係がうまくいっていないということを示すフレーズですね。

7) Right. The other person disapproves of whatever was you did.

■ out of the blue / like a bolt out of the blue
8) "Thunderbolt" refers to the light part of that phenomena. You 
could say "thunderclap" and that refers to the sound part of that 
phenomena.

■ with the wave of a magic wand
9) If you watch a magician on stage, you'll often see the magician 
using a magic wand as well.

■ as often as not
10) And people tend to use this when it's a little bit surprising 
that those things are nearly fifty-fifty.

■ put one's best foot forward
11) On the other hand, if you've gotten yourself into a situation 
that's gone from bad to worse, you could say that you got started on 
the wrong foot. You didn't make a good beginning.
