1) media
You'll notice Heinrichs uses the word "their" to refer back to 
"media." "Media" in English is a plural, but because it doesn't have 
the "s," you'll probably hear it sometimes used as a singular.

2) heyday
"Heyday" might look like sort of a strange word. It's usually used 
to mean era, but a personal era, a personal time when you were 
strong or prosperous, your best times in the past.

3) Usually if you hear a person begin with "in my heyday," they are 
going to tell you how things were better in the past.

4) scale tall peaks
Alvarez talks about "scaling tall peaks." The verb "scale" has 
various meanings. In modern English, it sounds like the same word. 
It's spelled the same way. It's pronounced the same way. But it 
comes from different sources. Like "scaling fish," taking the scales 
off a fish, comes from an old word for shell. "Scale," in this case 
as a verb meaning climb up or surmount or reach the peak, comes from 
a different word. It comes from a Latin background, and in Latin the 
word meant ladder. So you would use a ladder to climb up to..., you 
know, to reach a high point. And that's the meaning that's used 
here.

5) cell phones are busy
Yeah, and the only way you can tell the difference is because of the 
context that this phrase is used in.

6) appetite
It might seem a little strange to use the word "appetite" in 
relation to information because usually "appetite" means for food, 
you know, something you've got to eat. So you have to have a good 
appetite to stay healthy. Usually, when you are talking about food, 
"appetite" is used in the singular. So, for example, you could say:
Japanese people show a strong appetite for sushi. People go and eat 
sushi all the time. It seems to be one of the favorite things to go 
out and eat.

7) It seems that when you use "appetite" for things other than food, 
you can use it in the plural.

8) peruse
"Peruse" means to read something carefully and thoroughly. You could 
do it very intensely or you could do it in a relaxed manner, but the 
important point is carefully and thoroughly. Many people, however, 
use this word almost in the opposite meaning of "glance over" or 
"skim." I am not sure why this incorrect meaning has grown up 
connected to this word. But it might be because "peruse" also 
carries the idea of "leisurely." "Leisurely" might mean you just 
look at something quickly and don't worry about it too much. But in 
this case "leisurely" means slowly with plenty of time because you 
need to do it carefully or thoroughly. You don't have to be doing it 
quickly and intensely and thoroughly.

次男が足を骨折して帰ってきました。手術が必要になるかどうかの微
妙なところで、バタバタとしております。

体操の選手だったのですが、調子に乗って友達の前でバク転を披露
していて失敗したらしく、友達がわざわざ都内から車で送ってきてくれ
