Giving While Living (6) Friday, March 14
1<S>: Rich or poor, you can't take it with you as they say.
2<C>: Right.
3<S>: So, what do you intend to do, Chris, with all the money you've
accumulated over the years?
4<C>: [Laughter] Oh, what money? I'm afraid I'm not becoming rich. I
suppose I'll have something to give away at the end, so if my
husband dies before me, I'd probably divide it up among my siblings
because I don't have my own kids and my husband doesn't have many
young relatives, either. So, probably I'll give it to my sisters and
brother.
5<S>: You once mentioned that the most ideal situation is to die
broke.
6<C>: [Laughter] I thought that was an interesting idea. There is a
book called "Die Broke" and I haven't read the book itself. I've
read about it. And the idea is that you should enjoy your money and
spend it how you like for yourself while you are living, and then
don't worry so much about giving it to your children. Most people
don't really have enough money to really make a big difference in
their children's lives when they die.
7<S>: Right.
8<C>: So why not enjoy it yourself?
9<S>: Yeah, that sounds ideal, especially if you know exactly when
you are going to die, right?
10<C>: That would be helpful, wouldn't it?
11<S>: Hmm...
12<C>: I think, part of the advice in the book is how to set it up
so that when you die, you have used most of your money or you've
applied it to causes and people and yourself so that there isn't a
lot left to fight over after you are gone.
13<S>: This vignette was prompted by news about Warren Buffett...
14<C>: Ah!
15<S>: ... giving away most of his fortunes to Bill Gates
Foundation.
16<C>: Yeah, I've been reading articles over the last couple of
years. I'm not sure how long ago I started reading about these
things, but I'm sort of wondering what some of the... like the dot
com billionaires are going to be doing with their money because for
a hundred years or so since late 19th century there really haven't
been these really suddenly super rich people.
17<S>: No.
18<C>: Right?
19<S>: Not super rich people, but we hear about cleaning women who
got shares and became billionaires.
20<C>: Right. I think that's a little bit of a different phenomenon,
though.
21<S>: Uh-huh.
22<C>: If you think about Bill Gates and some of the other people
who started small companies at the beginning of, you know, the
Internet and computers and all the ... the digital revolution and
how rich they've become in just a couple of decades. I think that's
pretty different. And I think you have to go back to like the 19
century to some of the oil company owners and some of the people at
that time like Getty and Carnegie and Rockefeller who also became
extremely rich in a short time and then gave away a lot of their
fortunes to set up charitable foundations.
23<S>: Right.
24<C>: So the ... the articles I've been reading are wondering if
these newer, more modern super rich people are going to do the same
thing. And it looks like they might. They are beginning to, like you
mentioned the Gates Foundation, they have huge plans for spending
lots of money to help people.
25<S>: When you do charitable contributions in a big way, even after
you die, your name is still there in the names of foundations and
organizations.
26<C>: Right. That's a pretty good legacy.
27<S>: Uh-huh.
28<C>: And your family is already taken care of because you have so
much money. One thing sort of related to this though, I find really
interesting is how hard it can be to give away money. I think
Takahashi mentions that at the end of the last vignette.
29<S>: Right.
30<C>: I think it's hard to give away money because people don't
want to owe you even if you want to help them, you are just giving
it away and you don't want to think about it anymore. It's very
difficult to give money away usefully.
31<S>: And the taxation agencies are all over you.
32<C>: Yeah. You or the receivers, of course. There're tax breaks
for charitable giving, but still it's tough. Everyone thinks it's a
good idea to help people in need, but it's not easy to do.

■ I don't see why you should be forced to decide now.
33) This sounds like the advice that kids get off when they go to
college and they are expected to choose a major study. In the U.S.,
some places, you have to choose a major when you begin college.
Other places let you wait a year or two before you make your final
decision. And in all of them, you can change it later. You might
have to do some extra studies if you made your decision too late,
but it's fairly easy to change from one major to another.
■ Make yourself at home.
34) Of course, as a guest, you can't really act the same way you
would at your own house, but you should feel fairly casual about
asking for things.
■ Feel free to open the refrigerator anytime.
35) If I was really going to get myself something from the
refrigerator, I would announce it before I actually took it. I'd
say, "I'm going to get myself another glass of milk."
■ It's up to you.
36) The ball is in your court. と言うこともあります。

37) There are all kinds of ways you could say this. Here's a rather
formal version.

38) That's all for today.
39) Please tune in again next time.
