1) Being our final month for Tidbits in English, I have here a 
favorite tune of mine that I would like to dedicate to all of our 
listeners out there.

2) Sarah Vaughan was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1924. She took 
the top honors at Amateur Night held at New York's Apollo Theater in 
1942. And that feat started off her career in music.

3) She made her recording debut in 1944, and until her death in 
April of 1990, she boasted an illustrious career.

4) Here on Tidbits in English, it's time now for Word Watcher with 
Lisa Vogt.

  Word Watcher / Salt    take with a grain of salt

5) It's Lisa Vogt once again. How are you?
Every culture uses salt as a flavoring and preservative against 
decay. When we put salt on food, we often use the word "sprinkle," 
for example, sprinkle some salt on the vegetables.

6) Do you know how salt is counted? We use the word "grain" as in 
"I'd like to taste a few grains of this sea salt."

7) Today's Word Watcher expression is "take with a grain of salt" or 
occasionally "take with a pinch of salt."

8) To "take something with a grain of salt" is to take in what you 
have heard or read with caution or a little disbelief. In other 
words, use common sense and don't believe everything 100% without 
having gotten more facts first.

10) Listen to a sample dialog.

11) Remember listeners, there are many things that need to be taken 
with a grain of salt.
