■ pass away, decease, succumb, expire, perish, depart
1) All of those are fairly straightforward and not slangy, not
idioms things like that. I think because death is a very difficult
topic for most people. There are all kinds of euphemisms for death.
More idioms or slang type ones are things like "kick the bucket,"
"buy the farm" things like that.
2) The hardest thing is when you are talking to someone whose friend
or relative recently died. And if you are not sure, you can probably
be safe anytime, anywhere by saying, "I'm sorry to hear about the
loss."
■ ego trip
3) A similar phrase you could use, which is probably a bit older, is
"stroking one's ego." You do things to stroke your ego. Make
yourself feel good as if you are being caressed.
■ line the pockets of shysters
4) If it's not clear from the sentence, though, I think, most people
would imagine a lawyer when you use the word "shyster."
■ separate the wheat from the chaff
5) There are a couple other very similar idioms that also mean
separate things. When you separate wheat from chaff, you are
separating the valuable part from the... not so valuable part. You
can also talk about separating the men from the boys. And in this
case, it's not so much value that's being used to make the
separation. It's more the adultness. It's the strength and calmness
and power of men compared to the weakness or youth of boys. So
it's not value so much as age or experience. You can also "separate
sheep from goats" in English. But that's just basically separating
two
things that are quite different.
■ alive and kicking
6) "Alive and kicking" is also used sometimes when you are talking
about something that you thought was finished or without any power
or without any ability to affect other things. You could say, "No,
no, look, it's alive and kicking."
■ go overboard
7) It's usually used in a negative when you are telling people,
"Don't go overboard."
■ as Johnny scattered apple seeds
8) I think all kids in elementary school have learned the story of
"Johnny Appleseed."
9) It seems pretty amazing nowadays because "apple pie" is one of
the iconic things that are considered very very American.

1) laugh up one's sleeve / jaw drop
If you "laugh up your sleeve," you are secretly ★[ exalting →
exulting ] or rejoicing. In any case, you are trying to hide your
amusement. And it's often because you are amused at someone else's
trouble or problem. In this case, it says "she was laughing up her
sleeve" because she was watching her relatives' "jaws drop." When
your "jaw drops," you are showing astonishment.

＜編集後記＞
「ドラリオン」行ってきました。楽しかったですよ〜。プロ中のプロのパ
フォーマンスですね。2時間、目を離すことができないほどに次々に繰
り広げられる見事なショーに釘付けになりました。娘とまた来たいね、
と話ながら帰ってきました。
娘が初バイトのお給料で買ってくれたチケット、なかなかいい席で見る
ことができました。近くの席に叶姉妹が座っていてビックリ！！そこだ
け出ているオーラが違っていました。やはりゴージャスですね。
もっとビックリしたのは、ステージが始まる前にロビーでうろうろしてい
ると、"Sanae!!" と声をかけてくる人がいたのです。振り返ると、そこ
には日本にいるはずのない人が。長いこと日本で英語教育に従事し
ていましたが、昨年自分の国に帰った人でした。何でも今回はおしの
びで数日間日本にきていると……。すぐに帰るし、スケジュールがいっ
ぱいだったから誰にも知らせていないの、なんて話していましたが、い
やあ〜、もう偶然の再会にお互い喜びました。
