Word Watcher / Bread   know which side one's bread is buttered on

1) Welcome once again. It's Lisa Vogt, your host.
"Bread" has always been an important part of many Western diets. 
There are many expressions that include the word "bread" in them. 
And they all have expanded meanings.

2) For example, to "break bread" means to share a meal with someone. 
"Daily bread" means money that a person needs to survive, as in "He 
earned his daily bread by working at the sawmill in the daytime and 
the night shift at the cannery."

3) "The bread of life" is a source of spiritual nourishment.
For example, "Music is the bread of life for the jazz pianist."

4) Today, I have a somewhat long phrase for you, and it's "know 
which side one's bread is buttered on." It means that a person knows 
what is advantageous to him or her and what isn't.

5) For example, an employee who "knows which side his bread is 
buttered on" is careful not to offend people who could harm him and 
he makes sure that he maintains a good relationship with those who 
could help him. It's used like this:  テキスト参照
