1) Here in this installment of Tidbits in English, we would like to
feature a hit tune from the 60s that carries a profound and
meaningful message for all of us in these potentially turbulent
times. Here is a sampling of "Turn! Turn! Turn!" by The Byrds on
Tidbits in English.
2) The rock band, The Byrds saw their heyday in the 60s. They were
formed in 1964 and released their debut single "Mr. Tambourine Man"
written by Bob Dylan the following year. "Mr. Tambourine Man"
climbed all the way to the top of the charts. The Byrds were
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
3) Coming up now is Lisa Vogt with Word Watcher.

4) Hello, listeners. How are you? It's Lisa Vogt.
When I was a little girl, my mother would make me pudding when I
wasn't feeling well. So pudding is a food that's healing or soothing
for me. How about you? What were you fed when you were sick?
5) Today's Word Watcher phrase is an interesting one, and it's "the
proof is in the pudding." The original phrase was "The proof of the
pudding is in the eating," but today, this long version is seldom
heard.
6) The meaning? We won't know the true quality or worth of something
until we actually see it in action. So even if a pudding looks good,
unless we put it to a test and taste it, we won't be able to judge
it accurately. To put it another way, the results are the most
important thing.

＜編集後記＞
マラソンの高橋尚子選手の記者会見はさわやかでしたね。笑顔で
「これが今の実力です。」なんてサバサバと語っていたけれど、その
裏にはどんな苦悩が隠されているのかと思うと胸が痛くなりました。
どんなに頑張っても、どうにもならないことって世の中あるんですよ。
それでも前を向いている人は偉い！と思います。きっといつかは、
この苦労が報われるときがきますって。
なんだかいつまでたっても進歩しない自分の英語力と重ね合わせ
てしまいました。きのうもネイティブたちと一緒のミーティングがあっ
たのですが、彼らのペースについていけない。発言で口が挟めない、
挟んだところで固まってしまう……の連続でした。
ミーティングのあと飲みに行こうよと言われたけれど振り切ってフッ
トマッサージに行ってしまいました。この暗闇から出られるのはい
つのことやら……。その日が来るのだろうか……。
まっ、いいか！今日も食って勉強して寝るぞ！私は私のやり方で。
