1) Today, the spotlight goes on a request from several of our 
listeners. Here is Janis Ian with her hit from 1975, "At Seventeen."

2) That was part of "At seventeen" by Janis Ian here on Tidbits in 
English. The lyrics to this song I must say were a bit difficult to 
translate into Japanese because of the various subtleties. Let's 
take a look at the lyrics right now.

3) Singer-songwriter Janis Ian was born in New York in 1951. She 
began to show a knack for songwriting from the age of 12, and 
debuted at age 15 with a self-titled album. Her hit "At Seventeen" 
won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Award at the 1975 
Grammies. Her career waned during the 80s, but regained momentum 
after releasing her album entitled "Breaking Silence" in 1993. She 
still performs regularly.

4) It's Lisa Vogt, once again. How are you?
Do you like pies? Apple pies and minced meat pies, we can see many 
kinds of pies everywhere.

5) A "pie" is, of course, a baked dish of fruit, vegetables or meat. 
Because pies are often round in shape, we use pie chart to mean a 
graph that is divided into sections that represent portions of a 
whole. If someone wants a slice of the pie, it means that the person 
wants some of the profits or benefits.

6) Today's Word Watcher phrase is "pie in the sky." A "pie in the 
sky"? This is a phrase used to refer to an idea or a  plan that is 
unlikely to ever be realized, and overly optimistic goal that cannot 
be taken seriously. Or a promise of a rosy outcome that's 
unrealistic is a "pie in the sky."

ラーメン屋さんには女性ひとりではなかなか入りにくいって先日TVで
やっていましたが、そうですか？ 私、よくひとりで入るんですが……。

あんた女性じゃないじゃん、というような声が聞こえてきそうですね。
ウッ！女性を忘れたオバサンでした。

昨日は恵比寿の東口、駅の構内にある讃岐うどんのお店に1人で入
りました。結構女性のひとり客いましたけどねえ。お安くておいしいん
ですよ。10分もあれば食事が終るので、時間のないときには利用して
います。

え？　おじさんの域に入っている？　そんなこと言ったら、おじさんた
ちに失礼でしょう。
