Mother of All Mothers (6) Friday, December 28
1<S>: In the vignette, we talked about alpha moms, soccer moms,
slacker moms.
2<C>: Uh-huh.
3<S>: Now, what was your mother like?
4<C>: If I have to use that terminology, I would say she was a
slacker mom, but I really dislike that word.
5<S>: Well, in those days, I think the word didn't exist, did it?
6<C>: Well, it existed, but not so much in the somewhat positive way
you can use it nowadays.
7<S>: Oh, I see.
8<C>: Yeah. I guess I didn't pick up that slang very strongly. I
mean I know it exists, but for me the meaning of lazy and maybe a
little dirty and just not doing what you should is still very strong
in my mind...
9<S>: Hmm...
10<C>: ... although I understand here it's actually in contrast with
the alpha moms.
11<S>: Right. Let's summarize what an alpha mom is.
12<C>: Hmm. I would say an alpha mom is someone who approaches her
child-rearing duties or activities with a kind of professionalism.
13<S>: Uh-huh.
14<C>: And I think most of them picked up that professionalism from
their careers.
15<S>: Right.
16<C>: Or some kind of working. Maybe they are just that kind of a
person anyway. And even if they hadn't had careers, they would have
run their lives rather logically and carefully scheduled and
managed. But I think because, especially since the 60s, more and
more younger women have had careers and important careers, powerful
careers and so more and more of them learned skills and started
managing their whole lives in sort of a corporate manner like
somebody mentioned in one of the vignettes.
17<S>: Uh-huh. They may also have picked up technological skills.
18<C>: Yeah, probably because people who are alpha moms now probably
grew up even in high school with computers and then cell phones, of
course, or pagers a little bit earlier. So, they are used to using
all those electronic gadgets to manage their lives.
19<S>: And having worked before they may have saved some money.
20<C>: Uh-huh.
21<S>: Uh... so... they want to spend the money on their kids.
22<C>: Right. I think another point you need to think about together
with that is not just that they have the money but they choose to
use their money to get the best that they can. I think the idea that
they're perfectionists is an important part of the alpha mom
package.
Slacker moms maybe have ample money to spend on their kids, too. But
they may choose not to always give their children the best of
everything. I think in my parents' case, they didn't have a lot of
money, but if they had had a lot of money, I still think they
wouldn't have given us everything.
23<S>: Uh-huh.
24<C>: Because not that they didn't want to give us things, but I
think they felt that while we are growing up and we still have the
protection of our parents, it was good to learn what it's like to
earn things for yourself or it's good to learn how to be happy or
satisfied even if you can't have the best or you don't have the
best.
25<S>: So their children are independent-minded.
26<C>: Um... I suppose so. I think it's really hard to say because
each person is so different. Oh, that might be a difference also. A
lot of the alpha moms probably don't have a lot of kids. So, they
have fewer examples of how different kids are. That was one of the
points, I think, Takahashi made ― that kids aren't carbon copies of
their parents. If you only have one kid, you can see how the kid is
similar to one or both of the parents. If they are similar,
sometimes they're really different.
And if you don't have a bunch of different kids, it's probably
harder to see how they all grow up being their own selves. You know,
sometimes when parents and children don't get along very well, it
might be that the parents have one personality, maybe the alpha-type
personality, and the kids have the slacker personality. So maybe
just, you know, from day one, they have personality clashes.
And it was mentioned in the vignette that sociologists aren't
convinced that alpha moms are actually better than other kinds of
moms.
27<S>: Right.

■ What do you think?
28) This phrase you could also pronounce as "What do you THINK?" but
that tends to be a little more just asking for someone's opinion
more than their recommendation, more than their advice. "What do YOU
think?" means "Tell me your advice."
■ What should I do?
29) Or you could even introduce your question with "I'm really lost
here."
■ What's your advice?
30) Please remember "advice, a-d-v-i-c-e" is the noun, and "advise,
a-d-v-i-s-e" is the verb.
31) 似たように綴りが変化する単語に device がある。device, devise
■ What would you do if you were me?
32) This phrase "if you were me" is pretty much a set phrase now in
English. The verb form "were" is slowly disappearing in English, I
think. In the answer, people often say "if I was you," although "if
I were you" is also correct. Both are acceptable these days in the
sentence, in the statement. In the question, if you said "if you was
me," it still tends to sound rather uneducated and not quite
standard.

example.
