3<M>: Darryl, it's difficult to get the idea across using a limited
space when one needs to describe a foreign culture.
4<D>: Yeah, this passage, too, presents us with a bit of a challenge
as reporters. Certainly many concepts have passed from one culture
into another. "Sushi" and "sashimi" in food culture are two strong
examples of this crossover. But in the arts, it sometimes takes
longer. "Shouting the guild of Kanzaburo," for example, gets across
a bit of the idea, but it is not really what the "ohmuko" are doing.
They are more accurately, perhaps, commenting on his lineage, his
experience and his kabuki tradition. For news writers in English,
the challenge of explanation is even greater.

Word Watcher / Dry dry spell

6) Hello, listeners. How are you? I'm Lisa Vogt.
I was recently in Arizona and one day I washed some clothes and was
amazed at the speed in which everything dried.
7) In only 5 minutes, my pants and T-shirt were completely dry.
Laundry never dries that quickly in Japan even on the driest of the
driest of days. The air was very dry where I was.
8) Today's Word Watcher expression is "dry spell." "Spell" means a
period of time, so a "dry spell" literally means time when there is
no rain and it is very dry.
9) The usage that I would like to introduce today is the figurative
one. When someone goes through a period of not being as successfully
as they usually are, then we say that the person is going through a
"dry spell."
10) For example:
・ The baseball player is having a bit of a dry spell as he hasn't
made any hits in quite a while.
・ I'm sure that the beer industry will recover from its dry spell
once the temperatures start to go back up again.
・ The best way to get through a dry spell is to relax and stop
thinking so much about it. As with all things, this too will pass!

the meaning, is lost.

先日、ニューヨークからの客人と会うという話をしました。この人とは
確か３年くらい会っていなかったはず。その間に私はどんどんと成長
し、人相が変わってしまいました。
かなり chubby になってしまった私に気が付くだろうか？ と恐れてい
ましたが、何のことはない、あちらもしっかり成長していました、横に。
お互いに大笑いをし、お互いに You look great と慰めあいました。
レストランに入ると、このアメリカ人、「ねえ、あの人、日本のTV番組
によく出ている人じゃない？」 とある人の方を見つめます。振り返っ
てみると、そこには、デーブ・スペクターさんがいました。
