'Business Casual' Standards (6) Friday, December 14
1<S>: I like this line from "The Tufts Daily." This is the campus
newspaper of a major American university.
http://www.tuftsdaily.com/
2<C>: Right.
3<S>: And it says, "Today's students are very informal in the
classroom: pajamas and sweats are not an uncommon occurrence."
http://tinyurl.com/2uo777
4<C>: [Giggling]
5<C>: And I was quite amused by... by this line from the campus
newspaper.
6<C>: Right.
7<S>: Have you ever seen students in pajamas in class?
8<C>: That I haven't seen.
9<S>: Sweats you may have seen.
10<C>: I was in college in the late 70s. So, usually if someone was
in sweats, it was because they had been exercising before class.
Sweats weren't sort of normal, public clothing, you know, just
wearing around everyday. Nowadays that seems quite acceptable by
almost all age groups.
11<S>: Right.
12<C>: Uh-huh. When I was in college, I think I mostly wore jeans
or, you know, blue jeans or corduroy jeans or, you know, black ones.
I didn't wear real colorful ones, and I would wear skirts
occasionally, but not... not much at all.
13<S>: When I went to school here in Tokyo, there was one math
professor who was very strict about dress codes, and for us, we had
to wear either a black uniform, student uniform or a suit and tie...
14<C>: Wow!
15<S>: ... to class, or you were just driven off.
16<C>: I don't think I'd ever seen some guy wearing a tie in classes
when I was in college. We lived in the Mid West, which tends to be a
little more formal even now than the West Coast in the U.S. So there
are even regional differences. And even when I was in elementary
school, junior high school, my parents wouldn't let us wear most
casual clothes to school. They said going to school is like going to
work. You should dress appropriately.
17<S>: Hmm... how about going to church?
18<C>: Ah! Going to church when I was a kid, yeah, we had to have,
you know, nice clothes, dressy clothes.
19<S>: Nice clothes, church clothes.
20<C>: Right. "Sunday go-to-meeting clothes," it's, they are
sometimes called in the U.S.
21<S>: Uh-huh.
22<C>: So every spring, we would get new spring coats and we'd often
get new shoes or sandals and socks and, in those days we'd often
wear white gloves to church.
23<S>: Umm...
24<C>: You had to wear a hat also.
25<S>: I see.
26<C>: So, spring was kind of nice for little girls because you got
a whole new outfit, and then we'd get another set in the winter, you
know, a nice winter coat and shoes and hats. But nowadays, I see
people in shorts and T-shirts and tank-tops and whatever they happen
to be wearing in church. Man! I can't it's... it's hard for me to
fathom. [Laughter] I guess I'm showing my age.
27<S>: I think the main theme in the current vignette was the
transition from campus wear to business wear.
28<C>: Right. If you imagine kids going to school and going to
college and never been exposed to the idea of that you should dress
up sometimes and dress down other times, they need a little more
awareness of what's appropriate in different situations, I think.
29<S>: But I guess a lot of parents uh... raised their eyebrows when
they found coeds wearing flip-flops photographed together with the
president...
30<C>: Yeah, I was surprised.
31<S>: ... at the White House.
32<C>: I was surprised also when I saw that article. Surprised and
amused. I do find Japan, though, a little more formal than the U.S.
33<S>: Sure.
34<C>: Depending on the situation. There are some situations where I
find Japanese more casual or informal than Americans might be.

あんな時、こんな時

■ Is that spelled with one r or double r?
35) You might hear the same question this way as well. Is that
spelled with one r or two?
■ Does e follow i, or is it the other way round?
36) Yeah, the rhyme goes -- i before e except after c. Unfortunately
there are some other exceptions. The words "neighbor" and "weigh"
don't follow that rule.
37) E-i and i-e, especially in names, are very tough in the U.S.
because they usually came from various languages. So, if you
pronounce it as English speakers usually would, you might be
mispronouncing it. On the other hand, a family might have, you know,
ended up changing the pronunciation because everybody was
pronouncing it the wrong way.
■ What is the correct spelling of this English author's name?
Somerset Maugham (サマーセット・モーム)
38) The opposite is also true. People have seen the name written
often don't really know how to pronounce it.
■ What does the initial stand for?
39) This question might come up when you are spelling your name or
giving information, but it's not really about spelling. It's more
curiosity. People often use initials instead of their full middle
name.

40) There are various ways you could ask. Here's one example.
41) "ショーン リトル" or "リドゥル," it's hard to tell from
Katakana... could be spelled in all kinds of different ways. First
of all, the name ショーン is used for both boys and girls, males and
females. And it tends to be spelled differently depending on whether
it's a man or a woman using the name. One spelling is S-e-a-n,
that's usually used for men. There is also S-h-a-w-n, which tends to
be used for women. I've also seen S-h-a-u-n, and I think I've
usually seen it used for men, but I have seen these variations
applied to the sex that I wasn't expecting it to be used for.
"Little," when I see Little in Katakana, I think it's probably
L-i-t-t-l-e, but it could be L-i-d-d-l-e. It could even be
R-i-t-t-l-e or R-i-d-d-l-e or names like this that you might guess
is spelled with an "i" is sometimes spelled with a "y."
------------------
42) That's all for today.
43) Please join us again next time.
