'Business Casual' Standards (1)   Monday, December 3

1) a couple of hundred
You might have noticed that Conrad says "a couple of hundred." Many 
people also drop the "of." You could just say "a couple hundred."

2) strike the wrong note
"Strike the wrong note" is an idiom often used to talk about some 
kind of dissonance or some lack of harmony. In this case, capri 
pants aren't really appropriate to an awards banquet.

3) staple   定番、かなめ、主食
Takahashi talks about business casual being a "staple" of corporate 
America. In this case, it means basic or principal element or 
feature, and related to that, you can also talk about "staple 
foods." And it tends to refer to starchy foods that form a major 
part of some populations' diet. So, in Japan, you could say rice is 
a staple, and in Europe, you might say bread or maybe potatoes are a 
staple.

4) what you wear means business
Takahashi also mentions at the very end that "what you wear means 
business." The phrase "means business" doesn't always have to do 
with work or companies or that kind of business. People often use 
"means business" to talk about a situation that's important or 
serious or to describe a person who's not joking around. They mean 
what they say.

5) caveat   注意、警告
"Caveat" is pronounced in different ways. It comes from Latin. 
You'll often hear people say "キャビアット" as well. It comes from a 
new Latin phrase that means "let the buyer beware." It's a principle 
in commerce, meaning if you don't have some sort of a guarantee or a 
warrantee and you are the buyer, you are taking all the risk for the 
product in case it doesn't work.
