  Fields of Gold
---------------
1) Today, we will be putting the spotlight on a soothing ballad by 
Sting entitled "Fields of Gold." Let's listen to part of the song 
here on Tidbits in English.

2) From his album "Ten Summoner's Tales," released in 1993, that was 
Sting with today's song "Fields of Gold." The words and music are 
also by Sting.

3) Let me read to you the lyrics and while you are listening, you 
may want to look at the Japanese translation, which you can find in 
our textbook on page 55.

4) Sting was born in the northeastern U.K. town of Wallsend in 1951. 
His real name is Gordon Sumner. He was the popular lead singer and 
bassist for the group "The Police," which was formed in 1977. He 
released his first solo album in 1985 and has delved in various 
music genres including jazz. He has even proven to be an 
accomplished actor showing just how versatile a performer he is.

5) That was a short bio on Sting. Now let me read to you again the 
lyrics for today's song "Fields of Gold."

6) Here are some examples using words and phrases from today's 
lyrics.

"Silver" has been associated with money from a long time ago. So, 
when we say "a handful of silver," it means a handful of coins, even 
though most coins are no longer made from silver.

9) "Silver," of course, is a color. The word is also used to mean 
give a silver color to, like in "We could silver the rusted bicycle 
spokes to make it look newer."

10) Today's phrase is "silver bullet." The Shinkansen is sometimes 
called the "bullet train" because of the original shape of the 
train―the nose looks like a bullet―and its speed, even though it 
doesn't quite go as fast as a real bullet.

11) A "silver bullet" is used to mean a simple and quick answer to a 
difficult problem.

12) For example:
・ The researchers are searching for a silver bullet that will 
miraculously cure all cancers.
・ Do you think a silver-bullet solution exists to the crisis in 
Africa?

14) How wonderful it would be if there was a silver bullet to end 
all the suffering in the world. Don't you agree?

人は偉くなればなるほど、おごらないんですね。腰が低いというか、
他人に対して、いつも思いやりを持って接しているというか……。

3連休があけた月曜日、私のパソコンにはたくさんのメールが入って
