1<D>: Hi, everyone, Darryl Gibson here again. Today, we are going to
talk about jobs.
2<M>: So, Darryl, what did you think about this newly coined term?
3<D>: I think it's a great word, this "precariat," and I think it's
an example of how a made-up word in Japanese is likely to move into
English. I think, too, we are likely to see some Japanese baseball
terms, such as "shuuto," are going to move into English because all
of the Japanese pitchers are now working in the major leagues.
4<M>: Hmm....
5<D>: Before in English, we described a curveball as an inside curve
or an outside curve. Now, I think the inside curve is beginning to
be called a shuuto.

Word Watcher / Gold pot of gold

6) Hello, I'm your host, Lisa Vogt. Throughout the ages "gold" has
been a symbol of wealth and value. Have you ever heard the phrase "a
pot of gold at the endof the rainbow"? It's a very famous line in
English that everyone knows,and it's connected to today's Word
Watcher phrase.
7) "Pot of gold" refers to fulfillment, success and happiness. It
isthe achievement of all of a person's dreams and desires.
8) Most of us strive to find "a pot of gold at the endof the
rainbow." "Pot of gold" is also used to mean someunexpected good
fortune, like, to find oneself suddenly very wealthy.
9) Sometimes "a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow" is used when
talking about an unrealistic dream, since it's not possible to goto
the end of a rainbow because a rainbow is just an optical effect and
disappears when you try to getcloser to the end of it.
10) Some sample sentences are:
・ Hoping for a pot of gold, an upscale supermarket opened a
fancybranch in the new shopping mall.
・ It seems that people who tend to seek a pot of gold
are usually high risk-takers.

currentlypopular.
14<D>: Yeah, I think
this is probably a squeaky-wheel-gets-the-grease situation, where,
although there are many, manygood stories the media should and needs
to be covering, we tend, I'm afraid, to spend our time on those
stories that fall into our laps or are pushed hard at us by those
ready to talk. It's really just so much easier to follow the noisy
people than to seek out the more obscure by ourselves.

カンファレンスから戻ってきました。あ〜、やっぱり英語はわからん！
と、もう落ち込みを通り越して、開き直りに入っています。
カンファレンスには日本全国から英語教育のスペシャリストたちが集
まってきます。1年ぶりにお会いする人もたくさんいるので、誘い合って
ディナーに出掛けることになります。
昨夜もあるアメリカ人が誘ってくれたのですが、周りがネイティブスピ
ーカーばかりで、私には、さ〜っぱりわからない部分がたくさんありま
した。飲んで食ってごまかし、こうやって太っていく私です。（笑）
