1) shoulder   背負う
Fine talks about grown-up children "shouldering" various costs. When 
you "shoulder" something, you bear it. You become responsible for 
it.

2) there's no place like home
I think for many Americans the phrase "there's no place like home" 
brings to mind the movie "The Wizard of Oz." It's one of the key 
phrases at the end of the movie.

3) homestead
"Homestead" is another word that has extra echoes for Americans. The 
basic word means the place where your home or your house is. But in 
the 19th century, President Lincoln signed an act, called the 
Homestead Act, that encouraged people to move out west in the U.S. 
because they could get land fairly easily. There were only three 
main requirements. You had to be at least 21 years old. You had to 
build at least a small house, and you had to live there for five 
years. After that, the land became yours.

4) residents didn't move to old, but just got old.
This is kind of a tough sentence in English. You have to listen 
carefully to the intonation. Takahashi focuses a bit on "MOVE to 
old" and contrasts it with "GOT old" in that place. So he is talking 
about neighborhoods where people have lived for a long time.

5) retirement villages
Some of them have special rules that older people like. So, for 
example, you may not be allowed to move in there if you have 
children younger than 15 or 16, or you might not be able to move in 
with minor children at all.

6) I think in the past, many people couldn't afford to move far away 
to a new home in a warm, sunny, vacation kind of an area.

7) never mind   〜どころか
"Never mind" is used basically in two different ways. One way means 
without even considering. The other way is "Forget it. Don't worry 
about it."
