1) officious busybodies
"Officious busybodies" -- "officious" is an adjective that's used to 
describe people who act as if they are some sort of officer or boss 
or someone who has some kind of authority, but actually doesn't. A 
"busybody" is a person who meddles in the affairs of others. 
Sometimes you'll hear the phrase "do-gooders" used to mean 
busybodies.

2) fester   悪化する
"Fester," in this case, means "become worse, "but "fester" is often 
used to talk about an injury, a cut or a scrape that becomes 
infected and the infection grows and spreads. So, it's kind of a 
strong word.

3) backbiter   人の背後で噛み付く人、陰口をきく人
    sourpuss   （口語） 不愉快な人、ひねくれ者
A "backbiter" is a person who's spiteful or slanderous, and if you 
think of it as, for example, a dog that suddenly turns around and 
snaps at you, in human behavior, that would be a "backbiter." A 
"sourpuss" is someone who is always sad or gloomy or unhappy about 
something.

4) work done well
Fine says "work done well." In English, when you are praising 
someone, you might say "Well done," "Good job," but she uses the 
words in the opposite order. I suppose just because it's a regular 
sentence, she is not really using the set phrase as praise.

5) in short order   早急に、迅速に
"In short order" nowadays is usually used to mean "without delay," 
and it's been used that way for close to 200 years now. But why does 
"in short order" mean "quickly"? Well, originally "order" meant 
"arrange things" or "make a good arrangement," and then it developed 
the meaning of a military order and also carried the idea of "in 
sequence." So, if you arrange things or put them in sequence 
shortly, you are doing something very rapidly.

＜編集後記＞

先週、アメリカ人と一緒に 「江戸東京たてもの園」 に行ってきました。
都立小金井公園の中にある野外博物館で、日本の古い家屋を見る
ことができます。初めて行ったのですが、なかなか良いところですね。
紅葉が深まった頃に行くと、また一段と良いところかもしれません。

それにしても日本に来る観光客は、こういった場所をよく調べてきま
すよね。私より内容に詳しかったりして、いつもこちらが勉強させられ
ます。東京のあとは、伊勢、京都、広島と旅をしてから帰ると言ってい
ましたが、良い旅が続けていられるといいなと思っています。
