1<D>: Hi, everyone. Darryl Gibson here, and I must say I am looking
forward to today's discussion. We are going to talk about "baby
boomers," something that's very close to me because I am a baby
boomer myself. Marsha?

2<M>: Likewise.

3<M>: Darryl, with the baby boom generation nearing retirement, we
read about it a lot more these days.

4<D>: I think this is quite important because, unlike perhaps 100
years ago, people in their 60s and beyond are still, for the most
part, fit, healthy and ready to continue working.

5<M>: Darryl, personally, I'd like to get involved in some volunteer
activity when I retire.

6<D>: Volunteering is a terrific way to remain involved, and my own
country, like Japan, has a volunteer program, especially forolder
workers and retirees, in which they can share their knowledge and
expertise with younger people and sometimes with people in other
countries.

7<M>: Hmm...

  Word Watcher / Cent   two cents' worth

8) Hello, listeners. I'm Lisa Vogt, your host.
In the Unites States, where I grew up, we use dollars and cents.
These days one cent is almost one yen. One hundred cents is one
dollar. Many countries use the cent. For example, Australia, Canada,
the EU, New Zealand, South Africa and others.

9) The Word Watcher phrase that I'd like to introduce today is "two
cents' worth." "Two cents' worth" is often an uninvited comment or
opinion about a topic under discussion.

10) It's usually said at the beginning of the opinion, perhaps, to
protect oneself from criticism in case people don't like what you
are going to say.

11) Some examples:
・ Let me give you my two cents' worth. I believe that the project
should be postponed until next year because of the budgetary
constraints.
・ I'm going to offer my two cents' worth on the current immigration
policy.
・ Just my two cents' worth on this topic because I happened to have
met the author last week at a symposium.

14<M>: Unfortunately, we've stereotyped the elderly as helpless in
the media.

15<D>: I think the media has to be very careful not to project
stereotypes that are not only harmful but often not even close to
reality. Ages, in many ways, is in the eyes of the beholder, not
based in reality. For example, my mother, who is 79, volunteers for
the old people every week. She certainly doesn't see herself as old
and I think that's true of most seniors.

＜編集後記＞

先日、目の角膜の手術について書いたら、みなさんからご意見、体
験談をいただきました。結構、この手術をしている人、多いのですね。

メルマガの編集後記で、「眼」の事が話題になっていましたが、私は
今年の3月にレーシックの手術を行いました。　角膜がたまたま厚か
ったの為、出来ましたが、薄い場合、私の妹も同じ所で手術しました
が、別の方法が有ります。

最近こちらで話題の目のレーザー治療ですが、夫の友人は安く治療
をする東京の病院を探して、保険なども使って9万円で手術をしたそ
うです。右目・左目ともに10秒ほどレーザーを当ててそれで終わり。
今は視界良好だそうです。メガネやさん、コンタクトレンズの会社、ピ
ンチです。

私も角膜が薄くてレーシックは無理、と言われてしまいました。でもど
うしてもやりたくてPRKという昔ながらの方法でやってもらいました。手
術当日を含め二日間は目が開かない（しみって痛くて！）お岩さん状
態でした。１年経った今はそれもいい思い出（？）です。でもやっぱり
老眼鏡は必要になりました！

私の周りにもレーザー手術を受けた方がいらっしゃいます。
その方には合っていたようです。

僕も2年前に、手術を受けました。片目5分程度で終了し、費用も両
眼で17万円程度でした。今は快適です。特に痛みもそんなに感じま
せんでしたね。こんなことならもっと早くやっていればよかったと思っ
ています。

みなさん、お便りありがとうございました。うぅ〜ん、いろいろな方法
があるのですね。でも、まだ私には恐怖です。そういえばコンタクト
が初めてこの世にうまれたときも、目の中に異物を入れるなんて、
と恐れられたはずですよね。レーシック手術も当たり前になるときが
来るのでしょうか？
