1) observing the civilities
Takahashi talks about "observing the civilities."
Usually, "observe" is used to mean "look at carefully, notice, watch 
something happen so that you can learn." This usage, which means 
"conform your actions or your practice to something." So, "observing 
the civilities" means acting appropriately.

2) most
"Most" is often used in a superlative with "the"― the most money, 
the most attention, but you can also use "most" without "the," in 
which case it's no longer the superlative. It simply means "very."

3) coin of the realm
"Coin of the realm" is an idiom that's often used to mean the medium 
of exchange. So, in this case, it means that if you are not rude, 
you can't interact with the people around you.

4) cutthroat competition
"Cutthroat" is an adjective that's often used to describe very hard 
competition. You could also say "murderous" competition.

5) the rat race
"The rat race" is an idiom used in the U.S. anyway to mean social 
competition, trying to get ahead of everyone else, trying to be 
successful. Another way you could talk about this is to say you are 
trying to keep up with the Joneses. "Jones" is a fairly common 
family name in the U.S. So, "keeping up with the Joneses" means you 
are trying to, at least, stay level with your neighbors.

6) tiebreaker   決め手、決着をつけるもの
"Tie" has been around in English for over 300 years to mean people 
who are exactly level in some kind of competition. It seems to come 
from the meaning that they are tied together, they can't separate, 
but "tiebreaker" is much newer.

＜編集後記＞

アメリカからメールが入ってきました。知人なのですが、この秋、結
婚して渡米しました。向こうでも、仕事に必要な英語を身につけるた
めに勉強を続けているんだそうです。 「ディクテーション」という言葉
を検索していたら、私のサイトにひっかかり、びっくりしたとか言って
いました。

ディクテーションは時間もかかり、結構辛い作業なのですが、集中力
を要するので、英語力を最短で伸ばしたい人には、とてもいい方法
だと思っています。

「聴く → 書き取る → 理解する」 という作業を同時に行っているから
です。何気なく聞き流しているだけでは身に付かないのが英語です。

「長くディクテーションをやっているわりには、あんたの英語、そんな
にすごくないじゃない！」 と言われてしまうと、いやあ〜、ポリポリと
頭をかいてしまうことになりますが……。

ま、それはさておき、英語学習って長く続けるのは本当に大変なこと
ですし、どこまでやっても終わりがないのも事実ですね。こうなったら、
開き直って、自分の持っている英語力で楽しんでしまうぞ！ と、心に
誓う私でした。
