1) handwriting
"Handwriting" is a word that some people find a little difficulty in 
using. "Handwriting" and "penmanship" are often interchangeable, but 
"handwriting" refers directly to how the writing looks after you've 
written it by hand. "Penmanship" focuses a little bit more on the 
art or skill or style of writing. There is another word 
"calligraphy," which also talks about writing style, but 
"calligraphy" tends to be used for decorative writing not everyday 
writing, that you might use either in notes for yourself or in cards 
and letters for other people.

2) in my day
"In my day" is a phrase people often use to talk about the past when 
they feel like "the past" and "the present" are quite different. 
Also, Takahashi says he was taught to use slightly different wording 
for everybody. Actually, the advice means, "Think about the specific 
person who is receiving the thank-you note, and try to tailor it or 
craft it to fit that person instead of sending just a very general 
thanks-for-everything kind of note."

3) brisk and brusque
Both of these words include the idea of "quick" or "short." "Brisk" 
is usually used positively. It's used to talk about things that are 
keen or sharp or energetic or quick and efficient. You could even 
use "brisk" to talk about pleasantly zestful. So, a sharp but 
pleasant breeze could be called "brisk." Many people enjoy "brisk" 
weather. On the other hand, "brusque," although it often also refers 
to "quick and sharp," it tends to mean it in a negative way. So, you 
could take the same situation, and depending on how you understand 
the situation, you could call it "brisk" if you like it, and 
"brusque" if you don't.

4) ideograph   象形文字、表意文字、記号
You can also call an ideograph an ideogram. It's pretty much the 
same meaning, and it's a character or symbol that represents an 
idea, so for Westerns thinking about this, they probably first think 
of Chinese because the Chinese characters are ideographs. But also 
Egyptian hieroglyphics fit in the same category.

コンタクトレンズなしでも過ごせるようになる、目のレーザー手術、私
とっても興味あるのですが、なんだか恐くて踏み出せません。

アメリカでは、ごくごく当たり前の手術だと聞きますし、日本でも最近
では値段も安くなったので、この手術を受ける人が増えてきたようで
すね。

先日アメリカ人の眼科医と旅をともにしていたので、この件に関して
意見を求めると、私の目には、あまり適していないとの答えが返って
きました。角膜の弱い人には向いていないようなのです。しかも、レ
ーザー手術をして近視は治っても、老眼は止められないので、結局
めがねは必要になるよ、とのこと。

あ〜、でも、コンタクトをしなくてもいい生活、あこがれてしまいます。
