　A blockbuster effort from proprietress Christine Valette
　(who also deserves congratulations for Troplong Mondot's ascent
　to a St.-Emillon Premier Grand Cru Classe, currently suspended
　pending litigation), this full-bodied, multi-tiered 2005 continues
　to confirm its extraordinary dimensions and quality. It is
　unquestionably the tinest vintage for Troplong since 1990. A
　modern day legend, it exhibits a black/blue color as well as
　aromas and flavors of graphite, blueberries, black truffles,
　incense, and camphor. The sensational sweetness and layers of
　fruit are buttressed by high tannin, good acidity, and
　unbelievable precision and purity. This profoundly concentrated,
　full-bodied tour de force in winemaking is Madame Valette's
　crowning achievement, and it will be talked about for decades
　to come. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040.

　The first top-notch effort under new owner, Catherine Pere-Verge,
　and winemaking guru, Michel Rolland, Le Gay's 2005 is reminiscent
　of some of the estate's monumental wines made in the post-World
　War II era (1947 and 1950). Its dense purple color precedes a
　luxurious bouquet of licorice, acacia flowers, blackberry and
　blueberry liqueur, and kirsch. Full-bodied with a fabulous texture
　as well as purity, it also possesses some lofty, but sweet tannins
　that are largely concealed by abundant extract, glycerin, and
　alcohol. This amazing wine represents a new reference point for
　Le Gay. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035+.

　Different samples of Lagrange appeared to be at various stages
　of development, but none of them revealed the flamboyance and
　richness l tasted last year. The tannins are extremely high,
　but the wine is big, full-bodied, and slightly rustic with less
　oak than last year. There are plenty of olive, blackberry,
　cassis, and cedar characteristics as well as a hint of barbecue
　smoke, good freshness and precision, and a long, pure finish,
　but, wow, what an excruciatingly high level of tannin.

　The 2005 Duhart-Mlilon is not far behind the 2003 (which I rated
　94 points). A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot,
　it reflects the fact that the Rothschilds and their administrator,
　Charles Chevalier, have been making a major effort to increase
　quality at this property. Firm and structured, with a deep ruby/
　purple color and hints of graphite, black currants, licorice,
　smoke, and earth, it possesses a textured, rich, pure center,
　strong tannins, and real elegance as well as length. Four to six
　years of bottle age will be required, and it should last for
　20-25 years.
